Schiøler Schumann Artur Schnabel Ignaz Friedman Victor Borge 1956
Danish pianist Victor Schiøler's marvellous 1956 recording of Schumann's Carnaval Op.9, available on a double-disc set on the Danacord label: (http•••) Schiøler was a pre-eminent pianist in his homeland and widely respected wherever he played. A former pupil of both Artur Schnabel and Ignaz Friedman, Schiøler was himself teacher to his famous compatriot Victor Borge. A polymath whose culture and interests extended beyond music itself, Schiøler was also active in the medical field (studying what was not yet termed as 'psychosomatics') and by his own admission had 'too many irons in the fire.' Although this fine artist released records internationally on the HMV label, his name is largely forgotten today, although he is still remembered by the older generation in his native land for his regular TV show 'From The World Of The Piano.' His pianism is absolutely world-class and representative of his great lineage, as this marvellous traversal of Schumann's Carnaval indicates. Beautiful tonal palette, unerring sense of rhythm, wonderful rubato, elegantly crafted phrasing, marvellous balance of primary and inner voices, and refined dynamic layering are among the qualities on display in this superb reading. Two double-disc sets of the pianist's performances have been issued by the Danacord label - highly recommended! (http•••) It is to be hoped that his complete discography will be comprehensively released.
