Enesco Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Bentoiu 1950 1951 1952 1953 1993 2010 2013
The String Quartet Op. 22, No. 2 in G major was composed mainly between 1950 and 1951, though it has a lengthy pre-history and received a number of revisions in 1952 and possibly early 1953. The score is dedicated to the American pianist, composer, and arts patron, Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. The overall plan is very similar to that of Enescu's Octet, written fifty years earlier, in that it is constructed as a vast sonata-allegro form. In this context, the first movement functions as an exposition, the second and third movements serve as the developments, respectively, of the first and second theme groups from the first movement, and the finale is the recapitulation of the whole (Bentoiu 2010, 460). Although the layout follows the traditional four-movement pattern for string quartets, Enescu's sometimes unconventional procedures have provoked considerable disagreement when it comes to describing the structure of the individual movements. Recording made in 1993, with the record label "CPO" Picture : Emil Ciocoiu "Cires in floare" (2013)
