A favorite encore of British born pianist Lance Dossor, , Finalist fourth place in 3rd International Frederic Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (1937).The jury incuded Von Sauer, Backhaus, Neuhaus and Turczynski. The first prize winner was the great Jakov Zak -the third prize winner Malcuzynski - other notables being Jan Ekier and Monique de la Bruchollerie. The remarkable young 17 year old Roza Tamarkina was the sensational second prize winner - she died tragically aged just 30. Later, Lance Dossor's performance of Tschaikovsky' Concerto attracted the interest of Vladimir Horowitz and Lance recalled also meeting and shaking the hand of the great Sergei Rachmaninoff. Notes from Chopin Institute Site. "Born 1916 Weston-Super-Mare. Lance Dossor studied piano playing with Herbert Freyer (Fryer) at the Royal School of Music in London and with Emil von Sauer in Vienna. In 1926, he was awarded a Special Prize at the International Music Competition in Vienna. One year later, he took the 4th Prize at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. In May 1938, at the Eugène Ysaÿe International Music Competition in Brussels, he again came 4th. In Warsaw, Mr. Dossor's performances were well received. Music critics underlined that his playing was "precise to the highest degree, vivid, and in every detail a testimony to excellent education". The pianist never again performed in Poland. *Probably just after the war (though perhaps before its outbreak), Dossor left for Australia where he turned to teaching."Stanisław Dybowski *(I understand that Lance Dossor served during the war in the artillery[!!!] and came to Australia in 1953 - see Wikipedia for a short biography - JLW)
