Brahms Tchaikovsky 1933 1936 1942
Marston Records is pleased to announce a release that will delight fans of great piano playing: The Complete Josef Lhevinne. This 3-disc set features in the best possible sound all of the legendary Russian pianist's revered studio recordings, which have been constantly reissued and treasured by collectors for many decades. Also included are the complete known broadcast recordings of the pianist, some of which circulated in inferior sound but several of which were never known to exist even by the most dedicated collectors with comprehensive archives and connections. Among the new discoveries being made available for the first time is a stunning 1942 broadcast performance of the Brahms Piano Quartet No.1 in wonderful sound that reveals the beauty and brilliance of the pianist's artistry. Also of tremendous interest is a 1936 account of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1: complete except for the first few minutes, this unique concert recording demonstrates the technical proficiency and beauty of tone for which Lhevinne has been praised both throughout his lifetime and since his death. With many wonderful personal and creative touches, this performance makes for captivating listening. Additionally included is a superb traversal of a Mozart Two-Piano Concerto which Lhevinne plays with his wife Rosina, better known as a teacher than the superb pianist she was. Various solo broadcast recordings that have been released before are presented in much better sound than in previous incarnations; while these feature Lhevinne in repertoire that were part of his studio discography, these interpretations are of much more expansive depth and emotional expressiveness, providing for fascinating insight into his artistry. There is also another broadcast of the Tchaikovsky Concerto, the final two movements only, from a 1933 broadcast--traded amongst collectors for some decades, this performance has finally been remastered using prime source material and is therefore presented in dramatically better sound than ever before. A stunning release that will be a prized cornerstone of any collection devoted to historical piano recordings! (http•••) Video produced by The Piano Files

Sascha Gorodnitzki (24 May 1904 – 4 April 1986) was an American pianist. Born in Kiev (then in the Russian Empire, now in Ukraine), Gorodnitzki emigrated as an infant to Brooklyn, NY, where his parents founded a college of music. He was a child prodigy; his teachers included his mother, then Percy Goetschius, Rubin Goldmark, William J. Henderson, Edwin Hughes, and Krehbiel at the Institute of Musical Art. At Juilliard Graduate School, he was taught by Josef Lhévinne. La campanella (Italian: the little bell) is the nickname given to the third of six Grandes études de Paganini ("Grand Paganini Études"), S. 141 (1851), composed by Franz Liszt. This piece is a revision of an earlier version from 1838, the Études d'exécution transcendente d'après Paganini, S. 140. Its melody comes from the final movement of Niccolò Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 2 in B minor, where the tune was reinforced by a little handbell.
