Wainwright Rumling Neveu Hessen Bolton 1739 1748 1775 1776 1782 1783 1799 1825
Robert Wainwright +••.••(...)), Tempo di Gavotte: 00:00 Sigismund Freiherr von Rumling (ca.1739-1825), Rondo: 2:51 Monsieur Neveu (fl. 1782), Rondo: 5:33 (All three recordings are, as far as I could ascertain, the first to be made) What unites these three composers, each from a different country (England, Germany and Flanders)? All three had at least one piece published in the harpsichord periodical known as the “Journal de Clavecin par les Meilleurs Maîtres” (“Harpsichord Journal by the best Masters”), in the second year of that publication, 1783. The harpsichord was so popular back then that there were a number of such periodicals, which were sold to amateurs and connoisseurs throughout Europe. Robert Wainwright was the son of John Wainwright, and succeeded his father at the position of organist at the Manchester Collegiate Church. In 1775, he moved to Liverpool and took a job as organist at St. Peter’s. He died at the young age of 34, but left behind a daughter, Harriet, who followed in her father’s footsteps and became a composer. Of aristocratic background, Sigismund, Freiherr (Baron) von Rumling, whose family had property in Alsace and Hessen, moved to Munich to study music, and became a composer who created chamber music, and also for the theater. He was given the position of Director of the court chapel of Zwiebrücken in 1776, and in 1799, he took a similar position in Munich. In the “Journal”, there is a composition (presented here) by a “Monsieur Neveu”; no first name is given. In an old dictionary of musicians, I found someone named “H. Neveu”, who is most likely the “Neveu” in the Journal. Born and raised in Brussels, he later became the pianist of the Count of Artois in Paris. He composed a number of sonatas, as well as separate pieces, such as the Rondo you will hear in this recording. – David Bolton, “The Digital Harpsichordist” Really? You still haven’t seen my books?
