Patreon: (http•••) Score of François Couperin's second order in D minor from his first book (published in 1713) of "Pieces for the Harpsichord", an extensive collection of 220 short compositions arranged in 27 orders. This one is the most lengthy of all, with a total of 23 pieces, but seems more animated and even somewhat lighter than the previous in G minor. That may be due to its greater heterogeneity (for example, the pieces in the parallel major appear more haphazardly); after all, trying to maintain a coherent structural linearity in such a big instrumental set is quite difficult, even more at that time. An order is similar in nature to the suite - that is, in its historical definition, a succession of dance movements. Nevertheless, Couperin decides to interpret them in a vaguer way (as its name, "order", implies) and frees them from their strict structure, turning them into a more poetic, expressive and audacious design. For example, some of them (like this one) can have around 20 pieces or even more, making them twice as long as any Bach or Handel suite. The name of their movements are also a clear example of his particular quasi-narrative view: titles like "The Butterflies", "March of the Grey-Dressed", "The Mysterious Barricades", "The Brave Girl" or "The Victorious Nightingale" demonstrate his depictive intentions. But these musical depictions are not always explicit or detailed; they remain capricious and, as stated before, poetic. Couperin was also an amazing keyboard virtuoso, both at the harpsichord and the orgue, and one can identify these qualities in the astoundingly ornamented style these orders have. 00:00 - (Introduction) 00:18 - Allemande "La Laborieuse" 04:15 - Premiere Courante 06:19 - Seconde Courante 08:53 - Sarabande "La Prude" 10:40 - "L'Antonine" 12:05 - Gavotte 13:26 - Menuet 14:58 - "Canaries" 15:54 - [Double des "Canaries"] 17:02 - Passepied 19:03 - Rigaudon 20:47 - "La Charoloise" 21:40 - "La Diane" 23:06 - Fanfare pour la suitte de "La Diane" 23:54 - "La Terpsicore" 27:09 - "La Florentine" 29:24 - "La Garnier" 32:34 - "La Babet" 34:51 - "Les idées heureuses" 38:47 - "La Mimi" 40:50 - "La Diligente" 43:58 - "La Flateuse" 45:52 - "La Voluptueuse" 49:03 - "Les Papillons" Performer: Scott Ross

Second Ordre This collection of pieces in D is the longest in all the books of Couperin and contains several masterpieces. Grace and nobility seem to reign. In his official portrait Couperin has one hand on the score to "Les Idées Heureuses". It is a work of sonorous nostalgia and melancholy. " La Garnier" a tribute work, sings out in the tenor range of the harpsichord combining sensuousness and rhetoric in a most poetical homage. "La Terpsicore" delineates dance gestures and paints the muse of movement. Debussy in his preludes owes much to the spirit and genius of this piece. The dance movements live in the courtly world of the chateau (the gavotte and courantes) or the rough and tumble world of the barnyard or village square (rigaudon and passepied). There are suites within the suite (for Diane) and there is not one genre or character piece that is not inspired in its choices of delicate dissonance and voluptuous harmonies. The abundance of beats, trills, shakes in this second ordre empowers the music to enchant our hearts and move our souls. There is an intimacy here that touches, delights, and refreshes the way the first Parisian raspberry tarts open our spirit to spring each and every April. Andrew Appel Hillsdale NY Nov 10, 2020
