Disclaimer: I own nothing. The audio content of this video is the property of the Arizona State University Wind Ensemble and Tresona Multimedia. John Mackey's "Concerto For Soprano Saxophone & Wind Ensemble" is one of his most ambitious compositions yet. It was written for Don Fabian, Principal Saxophone of the Dallas Wind Symphony, whose performance of the soprano saxophone solo in Mackey's "Redline Tango" left Mackey astounded. After being commissioned to write the concerto, Mackey decided that he wanted it to reflect the different aspects of the saxophone as well as the saxophone's relationship with the other instruments in the wind ensemble, from woodwinds to brass and even percussion. An incredibly demanding piece for both the soloist and the ensemble, John Mackey's "Concerto For Soprano Saxophone & Wind Ensemble" has become one of his most highly regarded works. The first movement, "Prelude," introduces the themes of the concerto in a highly energetic opener. Performed by the Arizona State University Wind Ensemble. Mackey regards this performance of the concerto as being the best he's ever heard. Gary Hill, Conductor Timothy McAllister, Saxophone
