Milne Arensky Gardiner Galway Zoltán Kodály Wigmore Hall European Union Chamber Orchestra Camerata Ireland Scottish Chamber Orchestra Irish Baroque Orchestra Baroque Orchestra Kodály 1914
Performed by Siún Milne and Aoife Nic Athlaoich in the Goldie Chapel at Nano Nagle Place. About the artists: Siún is a keen chamber musician and has performed with a variety of ensembles throughout her career including the Royal Academy of Music Baroque Soloists at Wigmore Hall, The Vanbrugh Quartet, Callino Quartet, European Union Chamber Orchestra, Arensky Chamber Orchestra, Camerata Ireland and Musici Ireland. She is currently a member of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Aoife is widely in demand as a baroque cellist and performs regularly with the Irish Baroque Orchestra, Camerata Kilkenny and Sir. John Elliot Gardiner’s acclaimed Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique. She has given solo recitals at East Cork, Galway and Sligo early music festivals. About the composer: Zoltán Kodály did much to bridge the gap between Hungarian folk music and the European art music tradition. Brought up in the country, he knew folk music from childhood and also learned to play the piano and string instruments and to compose, all without much training. The tensions of the time are quite apparent in the emotionally harrowing Duo, composed in 1914 as the war was looming, but so is Kodály’s gift for melody, honed by his vocal writing, and his technical experience with both instruments.
