Karl Kempter Kempter Rheineck 2020
Cantamus Chor Sanctus - Grosse Pastoralmesse in G-Dur - Karl Kempter - Kirchenchor Cantamus Buechberg, Dreikönig 2020 - Rheineck.
Christoph Rheineck Schubart 1748 1776 1783 1797
1) Adagio in G Major:00:00 2) Andante con 3 Variazioni (B-flat Major): 5:04 World Première Recording (?) I selected these two pieces from the 1783 harpsichord periodical entitled “Blumenlese für Klavierliebhaber”. Their composer, Christoph Rheineck, was the son of a coppersmith. He himself learned to be a merchant, though being a musician as well, he was delighted to receive an invitation to move to Paris: the French finance Minister Turgot suggested he do so, and offered to give him a job at that ministry, though his “job” would consist merely in composing. But alas! Minister Turgot lost his own job in 1776, so Rheineck stayed in Germany after all. He bought a little “Gasthaus” (a sort of combination pub/cheap hotel) and spent his life running that business, and also of course making music. The professional composer C.F.D. Schubart once referred to Rheineck as “one of the most talented musical amateurs in Germany”. Yet though Rheineck was never a really professional composer, these two works show that perhaps if fate had been kinder to him, he most likely could have made a living even as a professional. P.S: There are various spelling of his name used in 18th century sources. Besides “Rheineck”, we also occasionally see “Reineck” “Reinek” or “Rheinek”. Seriously? You haven’t seen my books yet?
