THE SONGBIRD: Erna Spoorenberg +••.••(...)) was a Dutch soprano of impeccable musicianship and elegant bearing. She became a member of the Vienna State Opera in 1949, under Karl Böhm's leadership. In Vienna she sang mostly the standard lyric-coloratura fare appropriate for her young age (Adele, Gilda, Norina), but she did being to specialize in Mozart roles (a good stylistic fit for her pure timbre and cool temperament), including singing both Pamina and the Queen of the Night in "The Magic Flute" (though not in the same performance!). She relocated to Amsterdam in 1955 and became one of the leading sopranos at the Dutch National Opera for 15 seasons, with her final performance there as Konstanze in 1970. I am sharing this recording from a hard-to-find 7-inch disc I own made in the very early 1950s (also issued on 78 rpm), when Spoorenberg was quite young. Listen to the pristine youthful glow to her timbre! For high note trackers: she touches High E-flat in her cadenza.

THE MUSIC: Leïla, the soprano lead in Bizet's opera "Le pecheurs de perles" (The Pearl Fishers) is more of a French lyric role, with a smidgen of coloratura in her prayer to the deity Brahma at the end of Act 1. There are some frills, trills, and top notes in this section of the score in order to conjure the exotic world of Ceylon and elevate the vocal temperature as the act closes.
