[English translation by Avril Bardoni] At the heart of the opera, midway through Act Two, Ottone reacts to being suddenly outcast from his lover Poppea and all his former allies in the powerful lament Voi che udite il mio lamento. The role was composed for the contralto Francesca Vanini-Boschi, who was married to the bass Giuseppe Boschi (who sang in all of Handel’s London Royal Academy operas during the 1720s). Nathalie Stutzmann, contralto Orfeo 55 This aria was originally sung by contralto Francesca Vanini-Boschi (d. 1744), who created two male ("trouser") roles for Handel, Ottone in Agrippina in Rome (1709) and Goffredo in Rinaldo in London (1711). Bernarda Fink, Goffredo The Academy of Ancient Music under Christopher Hogwood Handel’s Rinaldo premiered on February 24, 1711. It was the first Italian language opera written specifically for the London stage. At the premiere, the role of Goffredo was sung by Francesca Vanini-Boschi, contralto en travesti. In Act II Goffredo, one of the leaders of the First Crusade, curses his situation, but despite the grief of losing his daughter he vows to fight on for victory or death. Mio cor, che mi sai dir? "Rinaldo was first produced at the Queen's (later King's) Theatre in the Haymarket on 24 February 1711. It was Handel's first opera for London, and also the first Italian opera specifically composed for the London stage. The concept of opera as a wholly sung musical drama was still new in Britain, and through the first successful production was an English version of Giovanni Bononcini's Camilla in 1706, the popularity of Italian singers — especially the sensational castrati — swiftly established opera in the Italian language as the standard form. ... Christian forces led by Goffredo (Godfrey of Bouillon) are laying siege to the city of Jerusalem, held by the Saracen king Argante.
