William Byrd Fraser Ventris Miro Lege Laus Supper
William Byrd: Pange lingua The Cardinall's Musick Andrew Carwood - David Skinner Score: www.cpdl.org (David Fraser) Pange lingua gloriosi corporis mysterium sanguinisque pretiosi, quem in mundi pretium fructus ventris generosi Rex effudit Gentium. Amen. / ENGLISH / Sing, my tongue, The mystery of the glorious body, And of the precious Blood That for the world’s salvation The fruit of a noble womb, The king of the nations, shed. Given to us, born to us, From an unblemished virgin, And having lived in the world, Scattering the seed of the Word, The time of his habitation Miraculously He closed in due order. In the night of His last supper, Resting with His brothers, The law being fully observed With permitted foods, To the group of twelve He gave Himself as food with his own hands. The Word in flesh true bread By a word makes His flesh, And also makes true wine the Blood of Christ, And if sense is lacking, To confirm a true heart Faith alone suffices. Therefore so great a Sacrament Let us fall down and worship, And let the old law Give way to a new rite, And let faith stand forward To make good the defects of sense. To the Father and the Son Be praise and joy, Health, honour and virtue And blessing, And to him proceeding from both Be equal praise. Amen. Amen.

Luigi Alva Franco Calabrese Domenico Cimarosa Supper Nino Sanzogno Mori Hofburg Scala 1735 1749 1792 1801 1815 1923 1927 1956 1992
This aria is from the comic opera "Il matrimonio segreto" (The secret marriage) with music by Domenico Cimarosa (1749 t0 1801) and libretto by Giovanni Bertati (1735 to 1815). It was first performed on 7 February 1792 at the Imperial Hofburg Theatre in Vienna in the presence of Emperor Leopold II and it was the occasion of the longest encore in operatic history; Leopold II was so delighted that he ordered supper served to the company and the entire opera repeated immediately after. This is the best known of more than 80 operas written by Cimarosa. This recording is from a recording of the full opera made in 1956 with Orchestra Del Teatro Alla Scala Milano conducted by Nino Sanzogno. Luigi Alva was born in 1927 and is still alive at 95 years of age. Franco Calabrese was born in 1923 and died in 1992. I haven't found a translation to Englsh but the Italian words are as follows. Non sposo la maggiore se credo di mori I have tried to improve the sound of the original recoding and, just to give a "live" effect, have added applause. This video is, of course, for anyone who wants to watch/listen but it is particularly for my Peruvian YouTube friend Rosa Angela who has given me a lot of encouragement in recent weeks.
