BORIS GOLDSTEIN (БОРИС ЭММАНУИЛОВИЧ ГОЛЬДШТЕЙН), violin (25/12/1922 - 8/11/1987) ELLA SELKINA (ЭЛЛА СЕЛЬКИНА), piano ARTHUR HONEGGER (10/03/1892 - 27/11/1955) VIOLIN SONATA No.1, cis moll I. Andante sostenuto [06' 20''] II. Presto [11' 14''] III. Adagio - Allegro assai - Adagio At the age of 5 Busya (as he was often called) started his violin lessons in Odessa with the legendary P. Stolyarsky and after only half a year made his first public appearance. After 4 years the family moved to Moscow, where Boris entered the Special Children's Group affiliated with the Moscow Conservatory into the class of prof. A.Yampolsky. At the age of 11, Goldstein took part in the 1st All-Union Competition. Due to his young age he performed separately from the competition, but he played so well that he was awarded a special prize. In 1934 J.Heifetz came to Moscow on a tour and Boris played for him. In March 1935 he won the 4th prize of the 1st Wieniawski Violin Competition in Warsaw. G.Neveu came first, D.Oistrakh 2d, H.Temyanka 3d, and J.Hassid received an honorary diploma. In 1936 Goldstein left Yampolsky’s class and started his lessons with Prof. L.Zeitlin. His new mentor allowed him to give more public performances, and it was very important experience for a musician who was just starting his professional career. In 1937 Goldstein with 5 other soviet violinists took part in the 1st International Ysaye Competition (later Queen Elisabeth ). The 1st prize went to D.Oistrakh, 2d to R.Odnoposoff, 3d to E.Gilels, 4th to B.Goldstein, 5th to M.Kozolupova and 6th to M.Fikhtengoltz. During the 35 years of work as a soloist of the Moscow Philharmonia +••.••(...)) Goldstein was allowed to go on tours abroad only twice. His concerts in the large cities of the USSR were limited. In the early 1950s an unwritten prohibition was made also on his further recordings. Only in 1961, due to the interference of Shostakovich, Goldstein was given the opportunity to have 2 recording sessions at "Melodia". The same thing was happening with his teaching activities. The only position that he was able to find was a teacher at the Music College of Moscow Conservatory. Among his pupils were Z.Bron and A.Skwortsow. In 1974 Goldstein left the USSR and settled in Hannover (West Germany). There he took the position of professor of the Würzburg Music Academy, and started his second life as a concert violinist. With the great success he gave concerts in the best European concert halls, often together with his daughter Julia on the piano.

From Wikipedia: Carl Flesch (Hungarian: Flesch Károly, 9 October 1873 – 14 November 1944) was a violinist and teacher. Flesch was born in Moson (now part of Mosonmagyaróvár) in Hungary in 1873. He began playing the violin at seven years of age. At 10 he was taken to Vienna to study with Jakob Grün. At 17 he left for Paris, and joined the Paris Conservatoire, studying with Martin Pierre Marsick. He settled in Berlin, and in 1934 in London. He was known for his solo performances in a very wide range of repertoire (from baroque music to contemporary), gaining fame as a chamber music performer. He also taught in Bucharest +••.••(...)), Amsterdam +••.••(...)), Philadelphia +••.••(...)) and Berlin (Hochschule fuer Musik, 1929-34). He published a number of instructional books, including Die Kunst des Violin-Spiels (The Art of Violin Playing, 1923) in which he advocated for the violinist as artist rather than merely virtuoso. Among his pupils were Charles Barkel, Edwin Bélanger, Bronislaw Gimpel, Ivry Gitlis, Szymon Goldberg, Ida Haendel, Josef Hassid, Adolf Leschinski, Alma Moodie, Ginette Neveu, Yfrah Neaman, Ricardo Odnoposoff, Eric Rosenblith, Max Rostal, Henryk Szeryng, Henri Temianka, Roman Totenberg and Josef Wolfsthal, all of whom achieved considerable fame as both performers and pedagogues. He said his favorite pupil was the Australian Alma Moodie, who achieved great fame in the 1920s and 1930s but made no recordings and is little known today. In his memoirs he said, ' ... there was above all Henry [i.e., Henri] Temianka, who did great credit to the [Curtis] Institute: both musically and technically, he possessed a model collection of talents...He owned the Brancaccio Stradivarius, but had to sell it in 1928 after losing all his money on the New York Stock Exchange.Flesch lived in London during the 1930s, and was later arrested by the Gestapo in the Netherlands, was released, and died in Lucerne, Switzerland, in November 1944.' Flesch made relatively few recordings. These included a small number of electrics made for the Edison company. This upload features one of these, recorded on 21 March 1928. Fortunately, my copy of this is in reasonably good condition and the surface is much quieter than many Edison discs. It is an excellent example of Flesh's artistry at the peak of his career.
