His first works he published under the pseudonym H. Lübner. Waelput was the first music teacher at St. Barbarac College in Gent Karel Miry. He first studied literature and philosophy at the University of Ghent, then studied harmony with François-Joseph Fétis and orchestration with Charles Hanssens Jr. at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels. In 1866 he won a composition prize. Although he wrote his earliest works on French texts, he was later a fiece supporter of Peter Benoit. In 1867, he obtained the Prix de Rome for his cantata The Forest. Waelput was co-founder and conductor of the Royal Flemish Theater in Brussels +••.••(...)). After a short stay in Germany, from 1869 to 1871 he became the director of the Urban Music Conservatory in Bruges. He organized a series of folk concerts in Bruges and was also conductor of the Concerts popular and the Musique Classique in Brussels. In July, 1871, after a conflict with the city council, he tendered his resignation. He was not nominated as director of the Royal Conservatory in Ghent, in 1871, due to his Flemish inclinations. He left the country for several years, residing in The Hague, Cherbourg, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Dijon, Douai, Issoudun, Fécamp and Lille. After returning to Belgium, he became conductor of the orchestra of the "Grote Schouwburg" in Ghent +••.••(...) and 1882-1885) and also director of the "Théâtre Royal" in Antwerp +••.••(...)). In 1879 he became a lecturer of harmony, counterpoint and fugue at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp. Hendrik Waelput is considered to be one of the brilliant representatives of the Flemish school; Furthermore, thanks to Edward Blaes, he is also called the 'Flemish Schubert'. As a composer he wrote in many different genres.
