Niccolò Paganini - Variations on ‘O mamma, mamma cara’ from ‘Il carnevale di Venezia’, Op.10 (1829), Dana Zemtsov, viola, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Daniel Raiskin, conductor Arr. Michael Kugel (2002) for Viola and Orchestra The "Carnival of Venice", is based on a Neapolitan folk tune called "Oh Mama, Mama Cara" and popularized by violinist and composer Niccolo Paganini, who wrote twenty variations on the original tune. He titled it "Il Carnivale Di Venezia”. In 1829, he wrote to a friend, "The variations I've composed on the graceful Neapolitan ditty, 'Oh Mamma, Mama Cara,' outshine everything. I can't describe it." Since Paganini, many variations on the theme have been written, most notably those by Jean-Baptiste Arban, Del Staigers, Herbert L. Clarke, Francisco Tárrega, Kaspar Mertz, Ignace Gibsone, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Giovanni Bottesini .... And now ... „Paganini and Kugel shake hands! The final work of this CD is really a co-production. It is based on the famous Variations on ‚O,mamma, mamma cara’ from ‚Il carnevale di Venezia’ (1829) by Niccolo Paganini. They give us an impression of the spectacular violinistic acrobatics of the violin wizard from Genua, who was admired and maligned by his contemporaries. Of the twenty variations, Michael Kugel retained eight in his arrangement and co-composition for the viola (2002) and added sixteen of his own. Thus the last ten minutes of the CD programme form a sort of wordly conclusion, full of exuberance, swing, and humour. Winner of numerous competitions and developing an outstanding career, Dana Zemtsov is one of the most promising international viola soloists of her generation. High-lights in the past seasons include Dana's performance of the Bartok Viola Concerto in the Main Hall of the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), playing chamber music with Janine Jansen and Martin Frost during the Utrecht Chamber Music Festival, and a recital in Carnegie Hall (New York). Dana is 1st Prize laureate of several competitions in Luxembourg, Italy, Austria, Germany, Portugal and the Netherlands. In 2010 she won the Dutch competition 'Evening of the Young Musician', became the 'Young Musician of the Year' and represented The Netherlands at the `Eurovision Young Musicians Competition' in Vienna. Dana is regularly appearing on the most important international stages, amongst others the Royal Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), De Doelen (Rotterdam), St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall, The Opera Hall in Tel Aviv, Carnegie Hall (New York). Dana Zemtsov plays a beautiful Sartory bow kindly granted to her by the Dutch Musical Instruments Foundation.” (from album booklet)

The Carnival of Venice is a folk tune popularly associated with the words "My hat, it has three corners", or in German, "Mein Hut, der hat drei Ecken". A series of theme and variations has been written for solo cornet, as show off pieces that contain virtuoso displays of double and triple tonguing, and fast tempos. Many variations on the theme have been written, most notably those by Jean-Baptiste Arban, Del Staigers, Herbert L. Clarke for the cornet, trumpet, and euphonium, Francisco Tárrega and Johann Kaspar Mertz for classical guitar, Ignace Gibsone and Louis Moreau Gottschalk for piano, and Giovanni Bottesini for double bass. Chopin's "Souvenir de Paganini", dedicated to the composer and violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini, is another variation on this theme. Audio and Video Production: David Hnat

He titled it "Il Carnevale Di Venezia," Op. 40. In 1829, he wrote to a friend, "The variations I've composed on the graceful Neapolitan ditty, 'O Mamma, Mamma Cara,' outshine everything. I can't describe it." Since then, the tune has been used for a number of popular songs such as "If You Should Go to Venice" and "My Hat, It Has Three Corners" (or in German, Mein Hut, der hat drei Ecken). A series of theme and variations has been written for solo cornet, as "show off" pieces that contain virtuoso displays of double and triple tonguing, and fast tempos. Since Paganini, many variations on the theme have been written, most notably those by Jean-Baptiste Arban, Del Staigers, Herbert L. Clarke for the cornet, trumpet, and euphonium, Francisco Tárrega and Johann Kaspar Mertz for classical guitar, Ignace Gibsone and Louis Moreau Gottschalk for piano, and Giovanni Bottesini for double bass.[3] Chopin's "Souvenir de Paganini", dedicated to the composer and violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini, is another variation on this theme. The popular novelty song, "(How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window?", written and recorded in 1952, is based on the tune. The piece has also been arranged for tuba, notably played by John Fletcher and available on the CD The Best of Fletch. Also Roger Bobo on Tuba Libera (cd). Other tubists whose performances of the piece are noteworthy include Øystein Baadsvik, and Patrick Sheridan. Dick Manning and Buddy Kaye wrote a popular song based on "Carnival of Venice," named "A Carnival in Venice," recorded by The Mills Brothers in 1954. Between 2015 and 2018, German crossover violinist David Garrett gained wide recognition with the tune, playing variations of Paganini's variations in movies and with various orchestras and bands.
