Lucia in Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" is a pinnacle coloratura soprano role and one of the few that offers moments of real onstage drama. This video focuses on one section of the famous mad scene that has always struck me as a litmus test for a soprano’s acting chops. It’s about a minute of music near the beginning of the scene that doesn’t have any of the typical coloratura trills or frills — instead it offers exceptional opportunities for deranged drama that divas can sink their teeth (and voices) into. It starts about three minutes into the scene with a melancholy echo of the melody from the “Verranno a te” love duet. Suddenly Lucia imagines she sees a horrific specter or phantom looming over the scene, trying to separate her from Edgardo (her true love, not Arturo who she was tricked into marrying and has now brutally murdered on her wedding night and whose blood she is splattered with). Lucia freaks out (“Il fantasma! il fantasma e ne separa!’) and then mentally escapes by imaging she and Edgardo running to the wedding alter to find their bliss. Powerful stuff, Mr. Donizetti! I have compiled 28 sopranos from my collection, mostly live performances, who did something dramatically interesting with these measures in the score / maybe a little chest voice, a taste of terror in the tone, an audible gasp or intake of breath, a semi-scream, etc.. To prep for this compilation, I listened to almost all of the approximately 200 Lucia mad scenes in my collection (and yep, now I’m half mad myself). I found that most of the recordings by historic sopranos (circa 1900 - 1940) rarely if ever included the beginning sections of the mad scene, almost always starting much later with “Ardon gli incensi” likely due to time constraints fitting music on to the 78 rpm sides. Of the more modern Lucias, I admit I was surprised at how many let this great moment go by without any attempt to elevate it dramatically — they just sang it rather like any other part of the aria. So, kudos to these 28 sopranos from across the world and across a century +••.••(...)) for committing to it. There are at least a hundred other Lucia’s going mad on YouTube that I have not even seen, so if you know of one or two who do something interesting or outlandish here, or have a particularly chilling way of repeating “il fantasma!” then post a comment and links below. Oh, there are three sopranos who I wanted to include but had to cut due to copyright claims: Karola Agay, Maria Gyurkovics, and Ada Sari. These are links to their renditions of this section of the mad scene other YT channels. Each diva does something quite bonkers with it, so give them a listen. - Karola Agay: (http•••) - Maria Gyurkovics: (http•••) - Ada Sari: (http•••) *28 SOPRANOS* (18 are making their first appearance on the songbirdwatcher channel). 1.
