John McCormack Puccini Giovanni Martinelli Odeon 1884 1904 1908 1942 1945
In honor of St. Patrick's Day, Dead Tenors' Society would like to showcase the art of history's greatest Irish tenor...and one of history's greatest tenors, period...John McCormack +••.••(...)). McCormack's recording career was a lengthy one, spanning from 1904 until 1942 and encompassing several hundred discs. Among the tenor's earliest recordings were a series made in London for Odeon. Among those titles is this recording of "Che gelida manina" from Act I of Puccini's La Bohème. There are certain phrases in this performance, particularly those that lie in the upper register of the voice, in which McCormack sounds uncannily like the young Giovanni Martinelli. The Irish tenor also proves that he was the possessor of a very fine high C...at least at the time of this recording in 1908.
John McCormack Sabatini Michael William Balfe 1862 1904 1910
Killarney, John McCormack, Recorded in 1904 when he was aged 20. One year after he had won the gold medal at the Feis Ceoil in Dublin and one year before he went for voice training to Italy with Vincenzo Sabatini. Killarney was composed by Michael William Balfe in 1862.The most notable feature of this early recording is that he did not use vibrato at that time.Have a listen to his 1910 recording to see how much his voice has changed.
