Huddersfield Professional Development Programme for Female Composers of Electronic Music Presented through a partnership between the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (hcmf//) and the Centre for Research in New Music (CeReNeM) at the University of Huddersfield Participants: Sophie Cooper, Nicole Raymond, Georgia Rodgers, Lia Su, Heloise Tunstall-Behrens. (Due to illness, Nicole Raymond's performance was postponed, and will be presented in a future edition of the Electric Spring festival.) Project mentors: Prof Aaron Cassidy (Director, CeReNeM), Prof Pierre Alexandre Tremblay (CeReNeM/FluCoMa), Roisin Hughes (hcmf//) The selected works were presented on the 48-channel channel, 66-loudspeaker 'Huddersfield Immersive Sound System' (HISS) and the 25.4-channel SPIRAL studio at the University of Huddersfield, as part of the annual hcmf// shorts, 18 November 2019. A follow-up project in 2020, called 'Sound Pioneers', was developed by the Yorkshire Sound Women Network (YSWN). Red Note and David McKay perform "1000 Airplanes On The Roof" in the Concorde hangar at the Museum of Flight, East Fortune, Scotland. About Red Note Ensemble As Scotland’s international contemporary music ensemble Red Note criss-crosses its home country each year, performing to audiences from the Outer Hebrides to the Borders in traditional settings including concert halls, and in bothies, pubs, clubs and aircraft hangars. Internationally, Red Note has performed to great acclaim at festivals and venues across Europe, Australia and the UK. The ensemble records for the Scottish Delphian CD label, and broadcasts regularly on Radio 3. The ensemble also undertakes an extensive programme of Access, Engagement and Participation (AEP) work, focusing particularly upon working with younger and older people, people with multiple disabilities, and people living in areas of high multiple deprivation, as well as working to address inequalities of access and representation due to race/ethnicity and gender imbalances. Alongside this, Red Note undertakes an extensive performer and composer development programme within schools, universities and conservatoires both nationally and internationally, through its annual Red Note Advanced Academy each September. Red Note’s work in 2017 included tours of Scotland, collaborations with the National Theatre of Scotland, performances in Hull and London at the PRSF New Music Biennial, and opening the 40th Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival with a new commission by James Dillon. Other commissions for 2017 included works by Gareth Williams, Tom Butler, Maja Ratkje and Kathy Hinde and Benedict Mason. In 2018, Red Note will premiere a new production of Vesalii Icones with dancer and choreographer Matthew Hawkins, at St Magnus International Festival, tour Maja Ratkje and Kathy Hinde’s Aeolian in Europe, team up with Lammermuir Festival’s Artist in residence Mark Simpson and perform the Scottish premiere of PRS Award Winning Tanz/haus : triptych 2017 by James Dillon at sound festival. Red Note is Associate Contemporary Ensemble at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, an Associate Company of the Traverse Theatre Edinburgh and Associate Ensemble of the sound festival Aberdeen. Iranian composer Arshia Samsaminia's piece he dedicated to US violist Michael Hall: In Memoriam (2016) for solo viola - performed at the Thirsty Ears Festival in Chicago on August 15, 2021. "In Memoriam" is the first solo viola piece written by Samsaminia. It's based on text from author Samuel Beckett's novel "Watt," which the violist must speak while performing. "Of the coming to Of the being at Of the going from Knott's habitat Of the long way Of the short stay Of the going back home Of the empty hearts Of the empty hands Of a flame with dark winds Going out Gone out" - Samuel Beckett, "Watt"(text excerpt) Arshia Samsaminia (*1989 Tehran, Iran) He studied contemporary composition at Sibelius Academy of Music in Finland, University of Gothenburg (Academy of Music and Drama) in Sweden, UDK University of Arts in Berlin, Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, and Tbilisi State Music Conservatory under the supervision of Helena Tulve, Malin Bång, Manolis Vlitakis, Marc Sabat, Ole Lutzüow Holm and etc. He is a current Ph.D. candidate at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece under the supervision of Prof. Dimitri Papageorgiou and Prof. Caspar Johannes Walter (University of Sciences and Arts in Basel) in Composition. He is one of the finalists of the Jonathan Harvey Scholarship 2020 at Huddersfield University. Samsaminia has had the collaborations with the well-known Ensembles such as the Klangforum Wien Ensemble, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Garage, Stockholm Saxophone Quartet, Trio Saeitenwind, Ljubljana Contemporary Chamber Orchestra, KLART Ensemble, EMTA Tallinn Sinfonietta, HSM Symphonic and Opera Orchestra Gothenburg, Hanatsu Miroir Strasbourg, Łódź Academy Symphonic Orchestra, GEPO Unesco orchestra in Paris, Sepia Ensemble Poland, Tbilisi Contemporary Ensemble, Omnibus contemporary Ensemble and etc. His compositions have been selected and performed in numerous festivals such as Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2020, Gaudeamus 2018 Netherlands, Sound and Images New York (Eastman Audio Research Project Concert), Ticino Musica 2019 Switzerland, OutHear 2019 Greece, Poznań Contemporary Music Festival Poland, Mixtur Barcelona, UNM Nordisk Iceland, Sound of Stockholm, Tehran contemporary music festival, Eufonija Festival in Serbia, Lerici Music Festival “Suoni Dal Golfo” Italy, and Siren Festival Gothenburg, Sweden and etc. He attended in Masterclasses held by Tristan Murail, Georg Friedrich Haas, Oscar Bianchi, Dimitri Kourldianski, Rebecca Saunders, Karlheinz Essl, Pierluigi Billone ,Georg Hajdu ,Alexander Schubert, John Chowning, José María Sánchez-Verdú, Mauro Montalbetti, Klaus Lang, Dror Feiler, Michael Finnissy, Simon Steen-Andersen and etc. His music has been performed in Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Greece, Poland, Iceland, USA, Italy, Slovenia, Finland, Sweden, Spain, Denmark, Serbia, Georgia, France, Armenia, Uzbekistan, and Iran.
