The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music Department of Music presents The 14th Annual All-Star Concert Cello Concerto in A minor, Op. 129 Schumann I. Nicht zu schnell (Not too quickly) Euan Shields, cello Stephen Karr, conductor Euan Shields is a cellist and conductor-in-training. He currently is a first-year undergraduate at UCLA, studying cello with Antonio Lysy. Previously, he attended the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s pre-college program, studying cello with Eric Sung as well as chamber music with the internationally renowned Telegraph Quartet. Shields was a cellist in the SF Symphony Youth Orchestra, receiving training in orchestral performance. While there, he studied conducting with Alasdair Neale and Donato Cabrera. A passionate chamber musician, Shields played cello in the Claudius String Quartet, which won first prize in the 2017 Galante Prize Competition. In 2015, Shields founded the San Francisco Youth Chamber Orchestra, organizing and conducting 10 local charity concerts. This past summer, Shields was selected as conducting apprentice for the National Youth Orchestra, receiving extensive mentorship from James Ross and Marin Alsop. Born in Greenville, South Carolina, Stephen Karr is establishing himself as a compelling interpreter of opera and orchestral works. In 2011, Karr co-founded Pacific Opera Project, for which he was music director until 2016. With POP, he led productions of Trouble in Tahiti, Così fan tutte, The Turn of the Screw, La Calisto (LA premiere), Ariadne auf Naxos and The Rake’s Progress, among others. The LA Times praised his performance of the Stravinsky as having kept orchestra, cast and chorus on a “well-articulated rhythmic track.” He has served on the staff of opera companies around the U.S., including the OPERA Iowa tour, the Glimmerglass Festival, Opera New Jersey and Palm Beach Opera. His international appearances include the Royal Opera House in Oman and an appointment as Cultural Envoy from the U. S. Department of State to Rotterdam. Karr‘s repertoire spans nearly the entire history of opera. He has taught at Chapman University, Michigan State University, USC and UCLA. His schooling includes degrees in organ performance (Mercer University and Westminster Choir College) and orchestral conducting (UCLA). He is enrolled in a doctorate in orchestral conducting at UCLA, where he studies with Neal Stulberg. He lives in Long Beach with his wife, Hannah Waldman and their children Leonard and Eleanor. UCLA Philharmonia is the flagship orchestra of The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, and one of Southern California’s premiere training orchestras. Since 2005, Philharmonia has been led by Professor and Director of Orchestral Studies Neal Stulberg. Its past music directors have included Lukas Foss, Richard Dufallo, Mehli Mehta, Samuel Krachmalnick, Alexander Treger, and Jon Robertson. 2017–18 highlights include an October performance of the Richard Strauss Duett-Concertino featuring Los Angeles Philharmonic principal clarinetist Boris Allakhverdyan and principal bassoonist Whitney Crockett; Philharmonia’s return engagement with the Hear Now festival featuring a program of works by Los Angeles-area composers; a March performance of Mahler Symphony No. 5 at LACMA’s Bing Theater and a staged production of Virgil Thomson’s The Mother of Us All.
