The bass is back—and this time, all frets are off. "Alive" by Pearl Jam will always hold a special place in my heart. It's the first song I played bass to, and the last song I jammed to with my guitar teacher, mentor, and friend Brian Lacy. Brian loved the Lord and was one of the most positive people I've ever known. I never remember him being mad or upset about anything. I'm thankful to know that he's still alive, and will always live, with the Father. #BriansMusicLivesOn In this video, I'm playing a fretless bass I finished and assembled from a kit. I've strung it up with DR Flatwounds for more "mwah". The stock pickups have a unique grit that's perfect for this song. And yes, bassist Jeff Arment recorded this song with a fretless, and it just fits. If you're wondering what I'm drinking at the beginning of the video, it's a can of Simple Truth Organic seltzer water, available at Kroger. I disavowed soft drinks a long time ago, and I think seltzer water is the better option. No sugar and all natural flavoring—can't get much better than that. And no, I'm not being paid to endorse this; I just think it's a great product. :) Gear and equipment: 5-string fretless bass purchased from The Fretwire DR Flatwounds Microtubes B7K preamp Focusrite Saffire PRO 14 GarageBand Canon EOS Rebel SL1
