Reginald Goss Custard Goss Boellmann Beard Edwin Lemare Notre Dame 1877 1893 1923 1929 1941
In view of the organ project that I announced in my Community Section post yesterday, I thought it was appropriate to upload a few more organ recordings! Here, Reginald Goss-Custard plays Boellmann's 'Suite Gothique,' recorded in the Queen's Hall on 3 October 1929. The movements are: 00:00 Introduction - Choral 02:04 Menuet Gothique 04:15 Priere a Notre Dame 07:35 Toccata It's apparent that problems were encountered in recording the Suite, as this was the third attempt. The first session took place at St Michael's Church, Chester Square, on 28 May 1929. Further recordings of each of the movements were made at St Michael's on 5 July 1929, but it presumably turned out to be an unsatisfactory venue for recording. The project was subsequently transferred to the Queen's Hall, where there was a fine 1893 4 manual, 65 stop Hill organ, rebuilt by Hill, Norman and Beard in 1923. Regrettably, Queen's Hall was destroyed on the night of 10-11 May 1941, when it was hit by a German incendiary bomb. Edward Reginald Goss-Custard was a largely self-taught English organist and composer born in 1877. He succeeded Edwin Lemare as organist of St Margaret's, Westminster, and in 1929 became organist of the Alexandra Palace. He made a significant number of organ recordings for HMV in the late 1920s. The final photograph shows Goss-Custard at the console of the Alexandra Palace organ.
