Ruth Gipps Chandler Vaughan Williams Janes Morrison Bower Vassallo Cbso 1942 1944 1946
Ruth Gipps joined the CBO (as the CBSO was then known) as an oboist in 1944, part of an oboe section that already included the composer Mary Chandler. The orchestra premiered her Second Symphony in 1946, and Gipps later edited the orchestra’s magazine Play On before pursuing her conducting and composing career in London. She wrote this short, ravishing Rhapsody Quintet in 1942, while studying with Vaughan Williams at the Royal College of Music. It’s dedicated to Gipps’s fellow-student and future husband, the clarinettist Robert Baker – later the CBSO’s principal clarinet, and a close colleague of John Fuest: the grandfather of our current principal clarinet Oliver Janes. An anthem by Thomas Tallis. For me, a short, but sublime composition of the Renaissance. And who wouldn't want to occupy the place to which Tallis transports us, even for two minutes? The lyrics are Tallis' setting of words from the New Testament of the Bible: John 14: "If ye love me, keep my commandments, and I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may bide with you for ever, ev'n the spirit of truth." I understand that Muslims recognise this as one of the instances of the Bible prophesying the arrival of Prophet Mohammed and Islam. (The keyword is "paraclete" which is translated as "comforter" in Tallis' setting) : "15 If you love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father: and he shall give you another Paraclete, that he may abide with you for ever: 15 Si diligitis me, mandata mea servate: 16 et ego rogabo Patrem, et alium Paraclitum dabit vobis, ut maneat vobiscum in æternum" Source: Catholic Encylopedia | Bible | John 14 I took these photographs this year: the first is of the magnificent Priory at Great Malvern, England (Norman (c 1085 AD) nave and late Gothic West window); the second image is a late Autumn landscape in the Derbyshire Peak District at Litton; the third, late Autumn trees at Chatsworth, Derbyshire, and the fourth: Winter trees in snow at Great Longstone. The final image I shot in the Bower chapel in the Church of St. John the Baptist at Tideswell, Derbyshire. The tomb is thought to be that of Sir Thurstan de Bower and his wife Margaret (about 1395). The recumbent alabaster figures of the couple are worn by the ravages of time, but still give us a strong impression of the knight and his lady, albeit in an entirely different era of English society.
