Carolus Luython Philippe Monte Bolton 1557 1596 1603 1612 1620
Carolus Luython was born in Antwerp. His father was a teacher at a “Latin school”, which probably means that Carl enjoyed a good humanistic education. At the age of about nine, he was accepted into the choir of the emperor Maximilian II. He most likely spent a year in Italy when he was about 15; if so, it was almost certainly in order to further his musical studies. He developed a high degree of skill as an organist, and was thus able to obtain good positions in that field. In addition, he also became quite skilled at organ repairing and building. In 1596, he rose to the position of first organist at the court of Emperor Rudolf II; by 1603, he was also made court composer, replacing Philippe de Monte, who had passed away. In 1612, the emperor died, and his successor, Matthias, apparently not being an avid music lover, decided to fire almost the entire group of court chapel musicians, including Luython. Poor Carl ended up dying in relative poverty in 1620. Luython composed many choral works (masses and motets). Unfortunately, we only possess a single keyboard work of his creation: this “fuga suavissima”, that plainly shows the high level of compositional mastery of this most excellent composer. – David Bolton, “The Digital Harpsichordist” Really?
