Catherine Bott Concertgebouw Amsterdam 2000
"Fine amours en esperance", composed by Audefroi le Bastart. From Chansonnier de Noailles, MS Français 12615, ff.55v-56r. Catherine Bott, soprano "True love has made me hopeful, And given me the wish to sing To lessen the sufferings of love. I so enjoy the sight of her face That I willingly accept Whatever she makes me suffer. Gracious and noble lady, I am yours, pitiless though you are." Catherine Bott tells why she chose to sing "Fine amours en esperance" in Concertgebouw Amsterdam for Wim Kayzer in an episode of the TV series "Of Beauty and Consolation": "In many ways, this is a standard medieval song of the concept of courtly love. It doesn’t really matter how deeply felt and sincere it is, it does seem to me, when it came to mind so quickly to sing for you, that true love is a good thing, is a beautiful thing; singing is a beautiful thing. These two things will give this young man consolation in the face of rejection from his beautiful beloved. So that seemed to be the perfect choice of song. The very wicked reason is that the thought of singing an unaccompanied song, all alone, in this fantastic concert hall was just too good a chance to miss." - Catherine Bott, Of Beauty and Consolation, Episode 16, 2000
