Diogenio BIGAGLIA (Venice, c. 1676 - Venice, 1745): excerpt Op. 1, No. VII (Affettuoso) #40daysinvenice Artistic Residency, Study 1: Bigaglia, what size flauto? In the early 18th century in Italy, 'flauto' meant, unequivocally, the recorder, and usually the alto recorder (in f). When writing for smaller sizes, composers of the time usually give us the indication 'flautino' - and one can usually tell by the range whether a soprano or sopranino is most adequate. But what about when the indication for 'flauto' is present but the range goes beyond that of the alto recorder? In 1722, Le Cene published Bigaglia's set of 'XII Sonate a Violino Solo o Sia Flauto e Violoncello o Basso Continuo' in Amsterdam. In 5 of these sonatas the range of the top part goes below the lowest note of the alto recorder, reaching a low d, playable either 'come sta' on a tenor size instrument or an octave higher on a descant size. Modern editions of these works have often assigned the top part to a descant size recorder even though that is not indicated by Bigaglia. We've tried both options in this first study of our artistic residency at the Emily Harvey Foundation in Venice. What do you think Bigaglia meant?
