Edouard Chavagnat Shepherd Elgar Liszt Montigny 1843 1845 1884 1885 1892 1913
Phillip Sear plays a shepherd's song - 'At twilight'. It is the first piece from an 1885 'Poème pour piano' - 'Nuit de mai' (May night) by the French composer Edouard Chavagnat +••.••(...)). / I know little about Chavagnat's life, except that he wrote a fair number of salon pieces in the late 19th century. It is interesting that the continuous movement of this piece reminds one of that in Elgar's famous 1892 'Shepherd's song' - both composers must have viewed shepherds as busy people. 'Nuit de mai' was dedicated to the eminent French pianist and Liszt pupil Caroline Montigny-Remaury +••.••(...)). Edouard Chavagnat Shakespeare 1830 1845 1888 1913
Phillip Sear plays an evocation of the Evening Star from 1888, by the French composer Edouard Chavagnat +••.••(...)). / I know little about Chavagnat's life, except that he wrote a fair number of salon pieces in the late 19th century. This nocturne is prefaced by two verses from Alfred de Musset's poem 'Le Saule' (The willow) subtitled 'Souvenir de La Romance du saule chantée par Desdémone dans l’Othello de Shakespeare': "Pâle étoile du soir, messagère lointaine, Dont le front sort brillant des voiles du couchant, De ton palais d'azur, au sein du firmament, Que regardes-tu dans la plaine ?/ Ah ! si tu dois mourir, bel astre, et si ta tête Va dans la vaste mer plonger ses blonds cheveux, Avant de nous quitter, un seul instant arrête ; - Étoile de l'amour, ne descends pas des cieux !" Which translates (I think) as: "Pale evening star, distant messenger, Whose brow emerges shining from the sails of the sunset, From your azure palace, in the firmament, What are you looking at in the plain?/ Ah! if you have to die, beautiful star, and if your head plunges your blond hair into the vast sea, Before leaving us, stop for a moment; - Star of love, do not come down from heaven!" The thumbnail shows a detail from Samuel Palmer's c.1830 watercolour 'A Cornfield by Moonlight with the Evening Star'. / Played by Phillip Sear (http•••) (Email: •••@••• WhatsApp: (http•••) )
