Giles Swayne Crane Garfield Weston 2016
Terraces for solo piano is part of the Infinite Avenues series (2016 - ) and has a companion piece called Boulevards. It makes use of relatively loose notation so that the interaction between lines is constantly varied and unpredictable. The musical materials are simple and raw. In this composition, I aim for a sense of space invoked by just a few kinds of sound and want to prioritise the physical movements of the performer. About the composers: Gregor Forbes Gregor Forbes is a composer, pianist and conductor based in Scotland. He studied Music at the University of Cambridge and completed a Master's Degree in Composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2016. Gregor has received composition tuition from Giles Swayne, Richard Causton, David Fennessy, and Laurence Crane. As well as his main activities, Gregor writes about music and organises concerts of new and experimental music. Renaissance Reimagined revolved around two concerts performed in Cambridge and London (as part of the Brandenburg Choral Festival) in April 2017. At the heart of this was a commission by Giles Swayne, Everybloom, written for choir and viol consort. Using text from Ulysses, this piece is an exhilarating glimpse into James Joyce’s stream of consciousness, the music capturing the puns, parodies and characters of this extraordinary work. The concerts also gave us the opportunity to engage with the wider public, through a composition competition, audience choir and an open rehearsal.
