Find out more: (http•••) Hear what our team had to say about this fine selection of casks on The Cask 88 Lock-in, our online channel for all things whisky. Among them, our tasters have sat on tasting panels for, and advised, top names in whisky, such as the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, the Waldorf Astoria, the Peninsula Shanghai and The Scotch Whisky Experience. Our panel tasted this selection blind, so we have replicated this experience by only revealing the origin of the whisky and its age at the end of each tasting. with (probably) Hermann Zechner (piano). private recording of a Radio Vienna broadcast, July 3 1934. Although in his time baritone Anton Tausche was a very influential concert singer and teacher in Vienna, there is very little information about him. He was probably born in the late 1880s or early 1890s, as the first of his appearances that I was able to trace took place in early 1920 when he took the baritone part in Mendelssohn's "Walpurgisnacht" in two concerts with the Vienna Singakademie. In the following years his reputation grew steadily. He appeared on the Viennese concert stages together with such big names as Richard Mayr, Hermine Kittel, Gertrude Förstel, or Hans Duhan; In the 1920s he sang in four concerts conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler, and Carl Lafite mentions him in his book "Das Schubert-Lied und seine Sänger" (1928) as one of the younger important Schubert singers. However, he does not seem to have traveled much and never recorded commercially. During the 1930s and 1940s he could often be heard on radio, and in 1947 a very interesting book by him about the interpretation of Wolf songs was published. Although he never favored atonal music, he was in contact with many of the more traditional composers of his time such as Joseph Marx, Hans Pfitzner, or Wilhelm Kienzl. In later years he was a teacher of renown. A (very rare) 10" LP containing some of his recordings was privately published as a memorial disc, so I presume he died in the late 1950s or early 1960s. I had this LP in my collection for some time when I stumbled across a batch of old home-recorded discs in an antiques store in Vienna. As the classical titles interested me, I bought the lot for almost nothing - the shop owner told me he was glad to get rid of that stuff nobody else seemed to be interested in. It was quite a surprise when I recognized some of the recordings I had on said LP disc: Obviously I had stumbled upon a part of Tausche's estate, and now had about 20 recordings of his voice! Sadly, most of the discs were in very poor condition. Many were of the acetate on cardboard type and had disintegrated over the decades. Now whenever I find the time, I piece together a little bit here and there. This particular side was cracked in eleven pieces, but fortunately cleaned up comparatively well. I think it's a very interesting reading of a song that is recorded not too often.
