The history of the Reconquista was a 781 year journey. It was the story of Christian Kingdoms fight against Islamic Spain. But it was a dynamic changing event that progressed through the centuries. We start with the History of the Kingdom of Asturias, the story of Pelayo, the battle of Covadonga, and the start of the war of Reconquest. Teatro Sociale Maschera Macleod
Edward Macdowell Edvard Grieg Macleod Tales Lawrence Gilman Morrison 1815 1901
Thought by many to be the finest of MacDowell's solo piano works, the "Keltic" Sonata was composed in 1901 and dedicated, as was its predecessor the Piano Sonata No. 3 (subtitled "Norse"), to Edvard Grieg. A motto on the front page of the score was derived from the works of William Sharp, who under the nom de plume of Fiona MacLeod wrote many novels and other works based on Irish folklore and who contributed much to the late nineteenth century revival of interest in Ireland in which MacDowell took part. The motto gives a sense of the music to follow: Who minds now Keltic tales of yore, Dark Druid rhymes that thrall; Deirdre's song, and wizard lore Of great Cuchullin's fall. The medieval Irish tales that underlie the "Keltic" Sonata derive from stories in the Ulster Cycle. Briefly summarized, the stories tell of Deirdre, the daughter of King Conchobar's harpist. The King fell in love with Deirdre and married her. But she loved another and ran off with him. They sought the help of the half-god/half-man Cuchullin, who was immensely strong yet mortal. King Conchobar attacked, Cuchullin fought bravely but was killed, and Deirdre winds up committing suicide. The heroic opening movement, marked "With great power and dignity," features a grand opening theme with thick chords and a quieter, enigmatic second theme. A powerful development follows, with rippling figures running up and down the keyboard. The movement effectively evokes the dramatic setting of the story. With the second movement we move to Deirdre. This sublime and fanciful piece, marked "With naïve tenderness," reminds one of the best of MacDowell's many character pieces. The music critic Lawrence Gilman, who was MacDowell's first biographer, felt that the sonata's third movement, "Very swift and fierce," was "MacDowell's loftiest flight." This violent music, full of difficulties for the pianist, depicts the death of Cuchullin. Although MacDowell included few specific programmatic references in the sonata, a two-note motive heard here may suggest the call of the bird that lands on Cuchullin's shoulder as he dies. After a brief slow meditation, a final flurry of notes brings the sonata to a forceful conclusion. TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 - Intro. 00:14 - I. With great power and dignity. 07:47 - II.
