Here is a presentation of a number of baritones from the past and present hitting the optional high A from the end of Rigoletto, at the end of the Rigoletto/Gilda "V'ho ingannato" duet. Verdi wrote the final line as Fb-Eb-Db. I don't know who the first baritone was to take it up to an Ab and resolve on Db, nor do I know who had the idea to one-up that guy and add a high A natural (technically, it's a B double flat), but whoever they were, they set an important precedent for all Rigolettos to come. Here they are, in no particular order: 1. Nicolae Herlea 2. Leo Nucci 3. Paolo Gavanelli 4. Robert Merrill 5. Leonard Warren 6. Željko Lučić 7. Sherrill Milnes 8. Cornell MacNeil 9. Frederick Burchinal 10. Georg Tichy And although they didn't go up to the A, any Rigoletto sing off would be incomplete without these last two definitive Rigolettos: 11. Titta Ruffo 12. Tito Gobbi And before you start asking "Where's Bruson? Bastianini? Cappuccilli? Taddei? Protti? Pons? Quilico? Alvarez?" I'll let you know that I sought out recordings of all the greats, but Bruson sang it as written in all the recordings I could find of him, as did Cappuccilli, but I know there is a recording of him singing the high A out there somewhere, if you have it , please post it as a response. As far as I can tell, Taddei, Protti, Pons and Louis Quilico only hit the Ab. Bastianini, I don't know. Try as I might, I can't find a complete recording of Rigoletto with him. Post it as a response if you have it! As for Carlos Alvarez, he sings a killer high A at the end of the opera, but it's only available on DVD right now and I can't find it anywhere. Again, post it if you got it! There's also a complete recording out there with Rolando Panerai, but I don't know what he does because I don't really like him much. But feel free to share if you've got it! ENJOY!

JOSÉ CURA, "Cavalleria Rusticana" / Ravenna Festival in 1996. Live broadcast on Italian television and radio. / JOSÉ CURA sang his first Turiddu in 1996 / "Ravenna Festival" in Italy JOSÉ CURA won the prestigious Abbiati Prize. In 1996, JOSÉ CURA built upon his burgeoning reputation and solidified his position as one of the most promising tenors of his generation. For his debut at "Ravenna Festival" in Italy, CURA sang his first Turiddu in Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana. The performance was broadcast live on radio and TV. Cura's interpretation won him the prestigious Abbiati Prize. Venue: Teatro Comunale Alighieri, Ravenna, Italy Dates: 14, 16, 18, and, 20, July, 1996 Turiddu: JOSÉ CURA Santuzza: Waltraud Meier Alfio: Paolo Gavanelli Lola: Anna Maria Di Micco Lucia: Tiziana Tramonti Conducted by Riccardo Muti Directed by Liliana Cavani La Repubblica / ‘Cavalleria’ has never felt so vivid. / José Cura's ‘Turiddu’ was an overwhelming success, and naturally will become the performance that will remain the point of reference. If you wanted to present the work of Mascagni in the best possible way, this occasion captured it in full and was a huge success. With confidences exchanged almost in the ear, emotions were contained and retained. And in a magnificent plot twist, Turiddu’s farewell was pronounced in mezza voce, with him stunned and terrified, unable to stand, determined to die rather than to kill. In the lyrical intensity and dramatic liveliness, ‘Cavalleria’ has never felt so vivid. José Cura draws a bold and youthful Turiddu, with a beautiful voice and wonderful presence. This was an overwhelming success, and naturally will become the performance that will remain the point of reference. Opera News, Coda, April 2015 / The ‘Cavalleria’ of 1996 in particular sticks in my mind for the mingled self-doubt and animal magnetism of the Turiddu, a newcomer named José Cura. Corriere della Sera / This ‘Cavalleria rusticana’ represents one of the most expressive and virtuosic results we have ever seen. The towering passions, the loving momentum, but also the invincible attraction to death; the immensity of jealousy, revenge, superstitious antagonism, and yet also bordering on sweetness in the environment and religious sentiment, all this makes the erotic and murderous madness of the protagonists even more devastating. Emphasized to an almost inhuman emotional intensity, like a jolt of electricity that leaves us stunned, overwhelmed, defeated. José Cura’s Turiddu was outspoken and lively. Success was an understatement; it was raining flowers and the entire auditorium was standing.
