The eldest of a family of three fatherless children, Georges Antoine finds himself confronted at the age of 15 with the harsh realities of existence. Nevertheless, when he has a moment of leisure, he deepens the musical studies he began at the Royal Conservatory of Liège at the age of 6. The war having broken out, he committed himself and miraculously escaped a hail of grapeshot during the Battle of the Yser . Unfortunately, the disease crushes him from the first months spent in the trenches. After being put on leave from the army, he moved to France in Saint-Malo where he taught, organized concerts for the relief of the poor and resumed composing. During the years 1915-1916, he perfected his Sonata op. 3, and composed the Piano Quartet in B minor, Op. 6 , the 1914 Harvest Melody , Op. 8, as well as melodies to verses by Charles Baudelaire , Tristan Klingsor , Albert Samain and Paul Verlaine . Despite very fragile health, he returned to the front and experienced the joy of entering reconquered Bruges at the beginning of October. His premature death deprived us of a more abundant catalog of works, but did not prevent several personalities from noticing Antoine's budding genius: Charles Van den Borren places the music of Georges Antoine between those of Guillaume Lekeu and ' Ernest Chausson , and believes that the future could have reserved for him "a leading role in the evolution of music" . According to Philippe Gilson, Vincent d'Indy claimed that Antoine was "wonderfully gifted" and that his Keyboard Quartet op. 6 was "remarkable". François Rasse considered that “the disappearance of this young composer, of genius, perhaps, was an irreparable loss for our national art”.
