Maria Galvany Proch Galli Galli Curci 1878 1907 1918 1952
Facts are sparse about the Spanish soprano Maria Galvany, and although it appears that she was probably born in 1878 (or thereabouts) no-one is sure when she died, although it could well have been 1918. Desmond Shawe-Taylor writing in 'The Record Year' (1952) wrote, 'Coloratura sopranos are often described as acrobatic, but Maria Galvany suggests a conjurer. The incredible speed and adroitness with which she negotiates repeated notes in alt, wide skips and chromatic scales, is like sleight-of-hand; it also resembles figure skating, or an old silent film in which everything happens at an immensely accelerated pace.' Recorded in Milan in 1907, Galvany's verion of Proch's 'Air and Variations' will come as something of a surprise to those familiar with Galli-Curci's well-known version. An extraordinary tour de force, but nonetheless a rendition that might have benefited from a little more restraint!

Deborah Cook Heinrich Proch Henze Rossini Barber Philadelphia Lyric Opera Company Covent Garden 1938 1965 1976 1985 2019
THE SONGBIRD: Although born in Philadelphia, coloratura soprano Deborah Cook +••.••(...)) primarily based her singing career out of Germany. She studied at Temple University and made her professional debut at the Academy of Music with the Philadelphia Lyric Opera Company in 1965. In the 1970s and 1980s, Cook sang coloratura and soubrette roles in opera houses and concert halls across Europe and the UK, including Zerbinetta at Glyndebourne and Fiakermilli at Covent Garden. She was featured in the world premiere of Henze's opera "We Come to the River" at Covent Garden in 1976. After returning to the U.S. in 1985, Cook became the executive secretary for the head of oncology at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, while teaching voice at Haverford College and Bryn Mawr College. She was the Cantor of several synagogues in Pennsylvania and later in Maine where she moved in the late 1990s. THE MUSIC: Though Austrian composer Heinrich Proch wrote over 200 art songs, three operettas, and one opera, he is really only known today for one coloratura concert showpiece, the theme and variations "Deh torna mio bene." It was programmed and recorded regularly up until about the 1980s, and although it is less popular now, it does occasionally show up in soprano recitals. The piece was sometimes used in the 20th century as a substitution aria in the music lesson scene in Act Two of Rossini's "The Barber of Seville," replacing the aria "Contro un cor" that Rossini wrote for Rosina, but that trend has fallen out of favor.
