Born in Corfu, he studied with Spyridon Xyndas, then in Athens Conservatory and finally in France in the Paris Conservatory and became a favorite of Jules Massenet and Leo Delibes. But it was in Italy where he became famous for his operas (Flora Mirabillis, Medge, La Martire, Rea, etc). This is the Intermezzo "Romaniesca" from the 2nd Act of his opera "La Martire" (The Martyr, 1894), libretto by Luigi Illica (one of the librettists of Boheme and Tosca).
