Its lyrics are taken from a poem written in the late 18th century by Baba Ould Cheikh; the melody was arranged by Tolia Nikiprowetzky.[1][2] The anthem was adopted upon independence from France in 1960. The unusual and highly complex rhythm of it makes it extremely difficult to sing; for this reason it is often erroneously listed as wordless.[2] It was replaced by the current national anthem on 16 November 2017, after the Mauritanian constitutional referendum of 2017.

The "National Anthem of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania" (Arabic: نشيد وطني موريتاني, Nashid Wataniin Muritaniin, lit. Anthem Title: “نشيد وطني موريتاني” (Arabic (Arabic script)) “National Anthem of Mauritania” (English translation) Description: One of the more unique anthems of the world, Mauritania’s anthem is based on a late eighteenth-century poem by Baba Ould Cheikh, who was inspired to write due to the problem of the myriad of Arabian sects that were developing at the time. The first president of the country, shortly before independence from France, asked the director of the orchestra of the French broadcasting service, Tolia Nikiprovetzki, to select a melody to be used for the future anthem. This melody, known for many centuries and was the melody that originally belonged to the verses, was selected from the many selections of folk music that were considered. The peculiar rhythym of the anthem (known as “fatchou”) makes it very difficult to sing, thus the anthem is often (but erroneously) listed as wordless. Special thanks to: Josh Lim for some of this information, Jo Hyo-roe for the sheet music, and to Michael Bristow for some of this information, and the lyrics in English. For what was sufficient for the first of us, is sufficient for the last one, too. And leave those people who do evil things with respect to God. They misrepresented him by making him similar, and made all kinds of excuses. They made bold claims, and blackened notebooks. They let the nomads and the sedentary people, both make bitter experiences, And the great sins of their [doctrinal] innovations bequeathed small. And just in case a disputant, calls you to dispute about their claims, Do not, then, dispute on them, except by way of an external dispute. Reference: (http•••)o/mr.htm
