Part III: Rare and unknown voices. Please open the bar to read more! Henri Legay, Tenor +••.••(...)) Jules Massenet - MANON J´ai marqué l´heure du départ With Victoria de los Angeles, Soprano +••.••(...)) Conducted by Pierre Monteux +••.••(...)) (Recorded 1955) My personal opinion: It´s a remarkable fact, that some of the best 'french' tenors were not french born: José Luccioni +••.••(...)), Gaston Micheletti +••.••(...)) and César Vezzani +••.••(...)) were all born on the island of Corsica. Léopold Simoneau +••.••(...)) was a French-Canadian, Alfredo Kraus +••.••(...)) was from Las Palmas and Nicolai Gedda came from Sweden. Also the fine lyrico-spinto tenor Joseph Rogatchevsky +••.••(...)) was of Ukranian origin. And even Miguel Villabella +••.••(...)) came from Spain. Nevertheless all of them were exponents of what some called 'the old gallic school'. We hear the typical french style with the great Georges Thill +••.••(...)): His diction and phonation was formed by 'singing in the masque'. Also a true french singer was Henri Legay +••.••(...)), who owned a light and elegant voice ('undernourished' said Lord Harewood) that he used with noblesse and in a modest style. At the age of 27 he won the first prize at the Conservatoire de Paris, and he began his career singing Operetta. In 1950 he made his operatic debut at La Monnaie, two years later he sang already at the Opéra-Comique in Paris (Gerald in Delibes' LAKME), the beginning of a long association. Soon he was established as one of the leading tenors of his time in lyrical roles like Nadir, Wilhelm Meister, Julien (in Charpentier´s LOUISE), Almaviva and especially des Grieux, a role for which he is most notably since he recorded the part with Victoria de los Angeles under Pierre Monteux in 1955 (A rendition that is widely regarded as the definitive MANON-recording at all. I agree). His youthful and sensitive voice conjures up perfectly an infatuated young man, hopelessly unable to resist the enchantments of his beloved. He also manages to evince the Chevalier's weakness when confronted by his stern father (In the 1970 Julius Rudel recording, the great Gedda sounded a little bit too old, and in the very first Pathé-recording of 1923 Jean Marny sings fine but much to campy). Victoria de los Angeles is simply sublime and caught up here at her vocal best. Henri Legay left us only a few recordings: LES PÊCHEURS DE PERLES (1954 with Martha Angelici under Cluytens), Lalo´s LE ROI DÝS (1957 with Rita Gorr again under André Cluytens. Legay sang a wonderful empathetic Aubade), the same year Bizet´s IVAN IV (Tzipine) and a Live-recording of Rabaud´s MÂROUF (unknown to me). With Legay's performance of 'Certainement j´amais Clairette' from Lecocq's operetta LA FILLE DE MME. ANGOT (1873) you can experience, what a YouTube-User commented as a "delicious pleasure! Legay´s stylish singing, his playful expressivity, light timbre and crisp diction are from a time long past..." I agree and this describtion hits the nail right on the head, why I don´t like open and vulgar singing with histrionic effects. Henri Legay - no matter which rank he had - was a singer in the true sense of the word. With this assessment, he's always worth to be heard. A representative of a lost style!
