★★★ My playlist with English choral pieces: (http•••) Edward Elgar In Memoriam +••.••(...)): THEY ARE AT REST Sir Edward William Elgar was an English composer. He is known for such works as the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, The Dream of Gerontius, concertos for violin and cello, and two symphonies. He also composed oratorios, chamber music and songs. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924. Elgar wrote a significant body of songs - approximately one hundred in all. Around one half of these are part songs of great delicacy, beauty and inventiveness. The majority were written for unaccompanied voices. Elgar's 'Elegy for unaccompanied chorus' (1909) was written in response to a commission from Sir Walter Parratt for an anthem to be sung on the anniversary of Queen Victoria's death. The text is by Cardinal John Henry Newman +••.••(...)). Elgar sets stanzas 1 & 3 of Newman's poem. It was first performed at the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore (Windsor) on January 22, 1910. They are at rest. We may not stir the heav'n of their repose By rude invoking voice, or prayer addrest In waywardness to those Who in the mountain grots of Eden lie, And hear the fourfold river as it murmurs by. And soothing sounds Blending with the neighb'ring waters as they glide; Posted along the haunted garden's bounds, Angelic forms abide, Echoing, as words of watch, o'er lawn and grove The verses of that hymn which Seraphs chant above. They are at rest. Edward Elgar Hubert Parry William Walton Felix Mendelssohn Arthur Sullivan Charles Villiers Stanford Villiers Ralph Vaughan Williams Walter Parratt Gioacchino Rossini
Dr David Starkey's exploration of how the monarchy shaped Britain's music concludes with the 19th and 20th centuries, when the crown rediscovered the power of pageantry and ceremony and when native music experienced a renaissance. David discovers the royal origins of such classics as Edward Elgar's 'Land of Hope and Glory', Hubert Parry's 'I Was Glad' and William Walton's 'Crown Imperial', as well as finding out how the twentieth century's coronations - culminating in the crowning of Elizabeth II - cemented the repertory of royal classics in the hearts of the British people. He hears music written by Queen Victoria's beloved Albert, Prince Consort, played for him in Buckingham Palace on a lavish golden piano which was bought by Victoria and Albert themselves. There are also specially recorded performances from St Paul's Cathedral Choir and Westminster Abbey and of works by Felix Mendelssohn, Arthur Sullivan, Charles Villiers Stanford, and Ralph Vaughan Williams, as well as Hubert Parry's classic 'Jerusalem'. David uncovers a rarely seen, diamond-encrusted conductor's baton that was a gift from Queen Victoria to her private organist, Sir Walter Parratt. He also recounts the duets sung by Italian opera composer Gioacchino Rossini with George IV in his decadent pleasure palace, the Brighton Pavilion; and visits the Royal College of Music in London, and St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, both of which played a crucial role in the revival of British music. Meek Herbert Howells Herbert Brewer Brewer Charles Villiers Stanford Villiers Walter Parratt Charles Wood Hubert Parry Ralph Vaughan Williams Paradisi Collard 1892 1912 1938 1953 1972 1983 2010
Psalm 37 Verse 11 'But the meek-spirited shall possess the earth' Herbert Howells was born in Lydney, Gloucester on 17 October 1892. He showed a keen interest in composition early in his life and, at the age of eighteen, became a pupil of Herbert Brewer, Organist of Gloucester Cathedral. In 1912 he was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Music and studied under Charles Villiers Stanford, Walter Parratt, Charles Wood and Hubert Parry. Unlike his close friend and mentor, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Howells never collected or made direct use of folk songs. He did, however, accept their importance as part of a wider musical heritage but preferred to allow church modes and the pentatonic scale to play a more prominent part in the construction of his output. The move away from secular to sacred music after Hymus Paradisi (1938) continued into the 1940s with a series of compositions setting Mass texts and Canticles, most notably the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis from the Anglican Evensong service. Herbert Howells died in London on 23 February 1983 at the age of 90. During his life he has been awarded a Collard Life Fellowship (Worshipful Company of Musicians), CBE (1953) and in 1972 was made a Companion of Honour. Performed on the 2010 Harrison and Harrison organ of St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Suffolk, England
