Bartok’s ALLEGRO BARBARO - arranged by John Spence for the Wollongong Con Community Orchestra. Collated from phone self recordings and zoom meeting footage, a reduced online version of the orchestra cautiously embraced this new approach to community music-making. Not quite the same as playing music together, but the musicians did an amazing job learning their parts and recording themselves in isolation during Term 2. Edited by David Rooney. Huge thanks to our ex-conductor, Cameron Zingel of Denmark. Thanks also to support from Timpanist, Greg Knight for wrangling the orchestra Zoom meetings, and to Con staff; Adrian Davis (conductor), John Spence (arranger), Mel Wishart (clarinet) and Luke Tierney (double bass). This project was supported by a Creative Wollongong grant. [some musicians submitted audio only and don’t appear on screen - additional images show a road trip south toward Kiama and the waves battering the Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse]
The political psychodrama rumbles on, but both our co-pilots think it's time for a curtain call on the leadership showdown. So will Rishi Sunak throw the towel in? Co-pilot Halligan climbs aboard the rocket from his holiday to deliver some hard truths, warning the former chancellor to ‘bow out’ if he wants to save his future in politics. Liam argues the political class needs to turn its focus to the energy emergency, rather than infighting. Fresh from declaring her allegiance to Liz Truss, co-pilot Pearson agrees that Rishi Sunak should step aside. She believes he is out of touch with the struggles most people face amidst the escalating cost of living crisis. Also hopping aboard the capsule of common sense is Michael Jacobs, economist and former adviser to Gordon Brown. He tells our co-pilots the policies being put forward by the Tory leadership candidates are fiscally irresponsible, and suggests the Labour Party now appears to be more economically credible. And our co-pilots share their favourite moments from the roaring Lionesses' triumphant Euros victory. i. Toccata 00:00 ii. Andante 03:12 iii. Presto-Maestoso 07:27 The music of Peter Wishart remains relatively unknown, despite the fact that his output was as prolific and varied as any mainstream composer from the 20th-century. He taught at the Guildhall before becoming Professor of Music at Reading University. The Sonata Op.52, dedicated to George Pratt, was completed in 1966 at his home in Great Elm, Somerset. It is one of only a handful of organ compositions which largely remain unpublished. The Toccata exudes life in the brilliant, dancing figures which characterize the movement. These figures break down to reveal a mood of simple reflection, captured in the Andante, which follows an organic ternary structure. The brief opening Presto of the final movement provides a momentary burst of energy before sinking into an intensely contrapuntal passacaglia. Short, rhetorical interludes eventually give way to brighter textures, as the music increases in momentum and culminates in a quasi-chorale statement of the main theme. This live concert performance was given by Martin Stacey on the 1883 Henry Willis organ in St Dominic's Priory (London) as part of the first AFNOM festival in October 2006. / Peter Charles Arthur Wishart (25 June 1921 – 14 August 1984) was born in Crowborough (East Sussex), studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris from 1947–1948 and taught at the Guildhall School of Music, Birmingham University, King's College London and Reading University where he was Professor of Music from 1977. His compositions include several neo-classical operas, orchestral and chamber pieces, and a large amount of church music. Critics have commented on Wishart's strong and individual lyricism, and his admiration for the music of Igor Stravinsky. He was married to the mezzo-soprano singer Maureen Lehane, with whom he worked at Reading University and lived within Bridge House, near Frome, Somerset. His son by a previous marriage James Wishart is also a composer. After his death, Maureen began a music festival in his memory, the Great Elm Music Festival, and later the Jackdaws Music Education Trust. She died on 27 December 2010.
