Beethoven Heidsieck Marcel Ciampi Ciampi Alfred Cortot Wilhelm Kempff 1936 1969 1970 1974
Let me introduce you to what might be my favourite performance of Beethoven's final sonata. This sonata is in 2 movements. As is often the case in Beethoven's late works, we escape from classical form. Beethoven claimed at the time that he did not have time to write a third movement. However, here we find a perfect balance between these two movements, where the duality. the opposition of two emotionally opposite poles is accomplished. The first movement, in C minor, has a tormented aspect. It then opens into a very different second movement, the Arietta. 6 variations on a theme that is transfigured. Beethoven explores different facets of emotion while gradually sliding towards an ascent of the soul. The sonata closes with the simplicity of a C major chord. Eric Heidsieck is a French pianist born in 1936 in Reims. He was a student of Marcel Ciampi and Alfred Cortot. He also learned Beethoven under Wilhelm Kempff. He was the first French pianist to play the complete Beethoven sonatas by heart in public in 1969. He then recorded them from 1970 to 1974. His interpretation of Opus 111 is characterised by great depth, a thorough understanding of the text and a fluid approach to the second movement. 0:00 I. Maestoso - Allegro con brio ed appassionato 9:06 II. Arietta - Adagio molto, semplice e cantabile
