The Vespers, or All-Night Vigil (although the performance does not last all night!) is one of Rachmaninov's most personal compositions since it is so closely linked to the traditional chants of the Orthodox liturgy. It is as though he is speaking, most profoundly, on behalf of fellow Russians throughout the ages. It was a joy to present this opening program in the magnificent acoustics and grand architecture of the Cathedral on the Parkway. Bach Julianne Baird Baird Moore Choral Arts
Your comments and sharing are welcome! The 2014-2015 season of BACH@7 Cantata Series opened in Philadelphia on September 10, 2014. Soprano Julianne Baird was the soprano soloist in J.S. Bach Cantata 82a Ich habe genung. This performance was presented in loving memory of the Reverend Canon Dr. Rudolph A. Moore. In his foreword, conductor Matthew Glandorf said: "We know that this cantata held significance for Bach, because his second wife Anna Magdalena, herself a brilliant soprano singer, copied it out in one of her music notes books. Could this possibly be a love letter and a communication?.. The original version that Bach performed in the 1720's was for a bass soloist and for oboe. He then later transcribed it for soprano and for flute. Again, I believe these little differences matter as they are offering a personal testament about Bach's own feelings about death, about faith, and about an unbridled hope. And that's what I believe shines through this magnificent Cantata." For more information visit Choral Arts Philadelphia: www.ChoralArts.com. O World, I will linger here no more. For indeed, I find nothing in you Pleasing to my soul. Here I am resigned to misery, But there, there I shall feel Sweet peace and quiet rest./ Recitative: My God! When will I hear that precious word: "Now!" Then I will depart in peace, And rest both here in the cool of the earth And there within your bosom. My departure is at hand, O World, good night!/ Aria "Ich freue mich auf meinen Tod" With gladness, I look forward to my death, (Ah! If only it had already come.) Then shall I escape all despair That still enslaves me now on earth. # # #
