Artist Note by John Heginbotham: "'24 Caprices' is inspired by the dramatic, eclectic, virtuosic, beloved music composed for solo violin by Niccolò Paganini. Tonight, we’re thrilled to share and premiere the first two Caprices through our Virtual Works & Process. This is the start of a large-scale project devoted to the creation of choreography and action for the entire series of Caprices. The vocabulary of these first two dances moves from portraiture, to rhythmically intricate, athletic movement performed by our full company. This project includes DH dancers of course, and in the future will also include collaborations with guest dance artists who work in multiple genres and forums. The extraordinary violinist Colin Jacobsen is our anchor and constant companion on this trip. Also, this project is about New York City and how it feels to be here right now." Metropolitan Opera English National Opera Philip Glass Karen Kamensek Anthony Roth Costanzo Roth Gandini 2017 2019
Phelim McDermott, whose productions include the hugely successful Satyagraha by Philip Glass, returns to the Met with a new staging of Glass’s Akhnaten, conducted by Karen Kamensek in her Met debut. Anthony Roth Costanzo sings the title role of the Egyptian pharaoh who attempted to inspire his people to adopt a new religion, abandoning the worship of the old gods for that of a single deity. In her Met debut, J’Nai Bridges sings the role of Nefertiti, Akhnaten’s bride, and Dísella Lárusdóttir is Queen Tye, the pharaoh’s mother. One of the staging’s distinctive visual features is provided by the Gandini Juggling Company, whose movements are perfectly choreographed with the orchestral score. This production of Akhnaten was originally created by LA Opera, Improbable, and English National Opera, where it premiered, winning the 2017 Olivier Award for Best New Opera Production. Philip Glass' Akhnaten will be screened live on Saturday, 23rd November 2019. Tickets on sale nationwide on 2nd September 2019.
Met Opera English National Opera Philip Glass Anthony Roth Costanzo Roth Karen Kamensek 1983 2016 2019
Director Phelim McDermott, whose productions include the hugely successful Satyagraha by Philip Glass, returns to the Met with Glass’s 1983 opera about the Egyptian pharaoh Akhnaten. It was Akhnaten – believed by some to have been a visionary madman, by others a genius – who established a monotheistic sun cult. To match the opera’s hypnotic, ritualistic music, and exotic texts sung in their original Egyptian, Hebrew and Akkadian, is a staging of fabulous beauty. With opulent costumes by Kevin Pollard and designs by Tom Pye, the production even includes a virtuosic company of acrobats and jugglers. The countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo stars as Akhnaten, with mezzo soprano J’Nai Bridges making her Met debut as Queen Nefertiti. Karen Kamensek conducts. This award-winning production was originally created by the English National Opera and LA Opera in 2016. Watch on Sat 23 Nov, 17.55.
