This ground-breaking album is the first of its kind – devoted entirely to new music written for the woodwind orchestra. It features outstanding performances by the principal woodwind players of the Czech Philharmonic, conducted by Shea Lolin, and includes four world premiere recordings. The recording was made to both promote British composers and to give focus to the woodwind orchestra. This program showcases the woodwind orchestra in all its voices: Overture for Woodwinds is Bright and lyrical, while Pantomime is joyously comical with moments of heartrending nostalgia. A notable shift in the language comes with Dreamtide, which is a beautiful expression of the subconscious, with delicate and tender lines. Battle Symphony is a pictorial suite containing elements of pastiche in ten highly original sections. The album concludes with Twisted Skyscape, a vibrant and excitingly powerful piece.Conductor Shea Lolin is a dynamic and versatile freelance musician living in London. His principal studies were in clarinet performance, composition, and conducting at the Colchester Institute, and he has since developed an inimitable portfolio career as a conductor, performer, and teacher.A second album of world premieres for woodwind orchestra, Chromosphere, will be released by Divine Art in early 2024.TracksPhilip Sparke Overture for Woodwinds (6:10)Gary CarpenterPantomime* I. MacFarlane and Gillies have brought their Bright chemistry and shared love of jazz and the Great American Songbook to a series of exciting collaborations, including their 2021 EP, Songs from Home. We Wish You The Merriest is sure to delight fans of both artists, as they showcase their musical prowess on timeless classics like "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."Says MacFarlane of their latest collaboration: “I’ve had the privilege of working with a lot of world-class jazz vocalists throughout my career, and Liz Gillies is among the very best of the best. We had a blast recording what we can promise is the most fun holiday album you’ll hear this season.”Adds Gillies, “After collaborating for nearly a decade, I was beyond thrilled when Seth came to me with the idea of recording a holiday record. Our first official record. There is no one I know who possesses a deeper knowledge and appreciation for this era of music than Seth.”We Wish You The Merriest follows in the tradition of the Bing Crosby-Rosemary Clooney duet collections that both MacFarlane and Gillies have long admired. The album also serves as a delightful return to holiday music for MacFarlane, who previously showcased his baritone voice in his acclaimed 2014 album, Holiday for Swing, which debuted at #1 on the iTunes Jazz Charts and New Release Jazz pages.Track List:1. One of the UK’s most popular vocalists and broadcasters, Aled Jones MBE, today announces the release of his brand-new album which not only celebrates 40 years in show business but reveals some previously unreleased tracks, recently unearthed by Aled himself. Whilst visiting his family home in Anglesey earlier this year, Aled began reminiscing over the 40 years of memorabilia his parents have collected throughout his career. They literally had everything, even a collection of multi-coloured shirts and bow ties. Aled’s mother explained they had been handmade for him by a BBC employee for a series he made in 1983, at the age of 13. This prompted Aled to go and find the original programme. He began to go through the footage and discovered recordings, which have never been released or even heard since the original broadcast 40 years ago. The album includes brand new arrangements of those classics including Ave Maria and Bright Eyes.Aptly titled, ‘One Voice – Full Circle’, the new record is the fourth (and probably final, says Aled!) instalment in his utterly unique ‘One Voice’ series in which, through the magic of technology, Aled is able to duet with his younger self: man and boy, baritone and treble. Here, album highlights include ‘Sailing’, The Sutherland Brothers’ 1972 track best known as a hit for Rod Stewart, Handel’s ‘Where’er you Walk’, from the musical drama Semele, Welsh love song ‘Bugeilo'r Gwenith Gwyn’ and traditional ballad ‘Scarborough Fair’. Aled even tracked down the original 80’s guitarist, Dylan Fowler, to re-record his part for this new recording. TRACKLIST:1. Bright Eyes 2. Sea Fever 3. Scarborough Fair 4. Where ‘ere You Walk 5. And it turns out that having five string players — two violins, viola, cello and double bass — works out just fine. And we kind of rediscovered what a cool thing our ensemble was.“In having the new members join, we've opened up some really interesting possibilities, pathways and gateways that just were not possible before. And I think that this album is a really good expression of that, because we're taking the group in different directions.”That new recording, Collective Wisdom, reflects the group’s commitment to new music. Levitt and two of the new members, violist Caeli Smith and cellist Laura Andrade, sat down to share their enthusiasm about their first recording together. You have a commitment to new music. Why? And why did you choose Collective Wisdom for the title of this recording?Levitt: “At the beginning, we realized that if we were going to have this career and decide to pursue this, we were going to need to work to expand the repertoire for a string quintet with double bass. And that meant we were going to be working with composers and commissioning new works.“Regarding the name of the album, right after we won the Concert Artists Guild competition, there was a prize given to us and that was to commission a new work from a young emerging composer. We chose Michael Gilbertson, and the piece he wrote for us was called Collective Wisdom.”The title track starts off with a snap pizzicati. Where does it go from there?Smith: “It is so dang hard, but when it comes together, both for a listener and for a performer, it is really gratifying. It's sort of like these shocks of lightning that are coming from different corners of the sky, and it requires this incredible alertness and precision from all of us at all times, which is really fun actually, when we can pull it off.”Andrade: “The process of putting that piece together is actually very gratifying because it's so rhythmically complex and we have to be super-laser-focused the whole time. That piece, in particular, is very much foundational to our virtuosity and our abilities as an ensemble.”You lead off with an energetic piece from the Punch Brothers, so I'm guessing you're big Chris Thile fans?Smith: “We are huge fans of Chris Thile and of the Punch Brothers. It is definitely one of our favorites to play. It sounds like something really dramatic happening in slow motion. We adore this track, and it's first on the album because it's one that we're the most proud of and excited about.”The piece is called Movement and Location, and Thile says that it's about retired baseball player Greg Maddux. Is that something you knew when you first heard the piece?Levitt: “When I first heard the song, I didn't think that's what it was about. And then I found out it's a song about baseball and perhaps a pitcher just trying to figure out the proper movement location for every one of their pitches. But you know what? That resonated with me because that's how I felt about every note that I played and articulated with the bow and just trying to get it to pop just right and be in time.”There are three folk songs right in the middle of this recording that reflect the heritage of one of your violinists.Levitt: ”Performing live on stage with someone from Armenian heritage is a really incredible experience because we're experiencing something really authentic. And I feel honored and privileged to be able to do that with Sami Merdinian on stage. The other thing is that, much like Béla Bartók, Komitas recorded these by writing them down, and in doing so he preserved history.“And I feel really similar to that when we make an album or we're doing a world premiere. If we don't document it and record it and release it, it may never exist; no one else may hear it.” Watch on YouTubeResourcesSybarite5 – Collective Wisdom (Amazon)Sybarite5 – Collective Wisdom (Bright Shiny Things)Sybarite5 (official site)Louis Levitt (official site)Caeli Smith (official site)
