From the Homeland: Islington Festival of Music and Art
Islington Festival (Photo: Marc Gascoigne)Islington Festival of Music and Art is returning with fourteen events across nine venues in and around Islington from 5 to 20 July 2024. This year's festival takes as its theme, From the Homeland, and events take us through the landscapes of Czech Republic, Hungary and Denmark, as well as journeys from India to Scotland and Australia to America.The festival opens with a Czech theme as Joana Ly (violin), Miguel Ángel Villeda Cerón (cello) and Martin André (piano) perform music by Smetana, Martinu and Dvorak, and the festival finale returns to the theme with chamber music by Kapralova, Janacek and Dvorak.There is a Verdi recital from soprano Skye Ingram, tenor Brenton Spiteri and pianist Fran Hills. Steven DevineMusic@Malling's Bach + series presents five concerts on 26 and 27 April 2024 in historic venues in and around West Malling, Kent, including St.Mary’s Church, West Malling, Pilsdon Barn (part of the historic Malling Abbey) and All Saints’ Church, Tudeley with its unique set of Marc Chagall windows. The concerts all feature Bach's music with contemporary pieces alongside, some works specifically created as companion works.Chamber Domaine, conductor Thomas Kemp (artistic director of Music@Malling) perform Bach's Brandenburg Concertos III and VI alongside companion works by Deborah Pritchard and Stevie Wishart originally commissioned by Music@Malling in 2022 as part of Six Brandenburgs: Six Commissions. Richard Harwood, principal cello of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, performs Bach’s Cello Suites I-III alongside contemporary works by Deborah Pritchard, Stevie Wishart, John Woolrich and Judith Weir. A radical new look: full line-up for Nevill Holt's 2024 festival

Throughout the festival there will be a display of sculpture by Anthony Caro across the Nevill Holt estate alongside an outdoor sculpture collection including work by Antony Gormley, Rachel Whiteread, Allen Jones, Conrad Shawcross, Marc Quinn and Sean Henry. Dvořák: Cello Concerto et al. (CD Review)
[…] the heart, making it one of those pieces that can serve as a wonderful way to introduce those unfamiliar with classical music into its spellbinding realm. When I received this recording for review, I tried to remember which recording if the work I had first acquired back in the mid-1970s when I began to become seriously interested in classical music, but drew a blank. However, I vividly remember hearing the work in concert. It was March 31, 1976. One of my professors, who was going to be unable to attend the Utah Symphony Orchestra concert at which the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007) was scheduled to perform the Dvořák, and knowing of my burgeoning passion for classical music, had kindly given my wife and me his tickets.
