Alla Zingarese (CD review)
A fusion of Western classical and gypsy music. Civitas Ensemble; Pavel Sporcl and the Gipsy Way Ensemble. Cedille CDR 90000 179 (2-CD set).First things first: Who are the two ensembles involved? The Civitas Ensemble are, according the booklet note, four of Chicago's top musicians--Yuan-Quig Yu (violin), Kenneth Olsen (cello), Winston Choi (piano), and Lawrie Bloom (clarinet)--who formed in 2011 as a chamber music group dedicated to presenting "engaging live performances of new and traditional works, inspiring a young generation of classical musicians, and bringing the healing power of music to those with limited access to live performances." Pavel Sporcl "is one of the world's most prolific violinists and high-profile recording artists." In 2008, "he started playing with Gypsy musicians and later formed Gipsy Way Ensemble, who have stayed in its current formation since 2012, with Ensemble members Zoltan Sandor, viola; Jan Rigo, double bass; and Tomas Vontszemu, cimbalom." Together, they […]

Woeful countenance
Although countertenor-turned-conductor René Jacobs has long been one of the most important figures in 17th and 18th century opera, his appearances in the U.S. have been few, so “Trove Thursday” steps in with one of Jacobs’s favorite and rarest rediscoveries, Francesco Conti’s marvelous Don Chisciotte in Sierra Morena from 1719. Since then, a few others have taken up Conti—Alan Curtis recorded his oratorio David with Simone Kermes and Marjana Mijanovic, and worth searching out is a CD (now out-of-print) of cantatas gorgeously sung by Bernarda Fink. Jacobs has a large and wide-ranging discography on Harmonia Mundi but for some reason he never recorded Conti’s opera despite his obvious fondness for it. He has returned […]

by Paul E. Robinson CLASSICAL TRAVELS River Cruise along the Main, the Rhine and the Danube August 2013 This past August, Marita and I thoroughly enjoyed the “European Jewels” Uniworld River Cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. We were not expecting a concentration of musical events on this excursion; rather, we thought it would give us a view of Europe from a new perspective (i.e., docking within walking distance of towns and cities) – and it did, but to our delight, there was glorious music on this cruise as well, often in unexpected places. Up until about 20 years ago, this particular river cruise would not even have been possible; there simply was no water route connecting Holland, Germany, Austria and Hungary. The Romans had a dream to connect the Rhine and the Danube, to have a water route from the Black Sea to […]
