Seven years after they triumphed with Dvořák’s quartets op. 96 “American” and op. 106, the Pavel Haas Quartet are back to Dvořák. For the occasion of recording his quintets, they have invited two guests: the pianist Boris Giltburg, as well as one of the group’s founding members, violist Pavel Nikl. Antonín Dvořák composed his Piano Quintet No. 2 while staying at his beloved summer house in the late summer of 1887. The renowned critic Eduard Hanslick responded to its performance in Vienna enthusiastically by writing “It is one of his most beautiful works. A genuine Dvořák.“ The String Quintet op.

Leading quartet loses viola over family illness
The award-winning Pavel Haas Quartet has been forced to make a personnel change. Statement by their agency, Intermusica: Due to a serious illness in his immediate family, Pavel Nikl, the viola player and founding member of the Pavel Haas Quartet, has very sadly had to take the difficult decision to leave the quartet. Radim Sedmidubský, up until now a member of the Škampa Quartet and a longstanding friend of the ensemble, has joined the Pavel Haas Quartet to replace him with immediate effect. Czech viola player Radim Sedmidubský studied at the Prague Academy of Music with Milan Škampa, a former member of the legendary Smetana Quartet. Pavel Haas Quartet a New Local Celebrity
Thursday night the Celebrity Series of Boston presented the Prague-based Pavel Haas Quartet in its long-overdue Pickman Hall debut [the quartet has concertized Boston before privately]. Its exciting program played with verve and limpid grace provided an auspicious start; let’s hope we see much more of this exciting group. Named after the Czech composer imprisoned at Theresienstadt and killed at Auschwitz, this ensemble rose to prominence a decade ago when it won the Paolo Borciani competition. Now with five CDs, all recorded on Supraphon, this string foursome holds multiple Gramophone Awards as well as a Diapason d’Or de l’année, and tours the world to great acclaim. The group found a teacher and mentor in Milan Skampa, violist of the Smetana Quartet. The four are: Veronika Jarušková and Marek Zwiebel, violins; Pavel Nikl, viola; and Peter Jarušek, cello.
