A Life on-Line: Otello in Birmingham, Wagner's villa at Grange Park Opera, and an immersive, genderswapping Midsummer Night's Dream
Verdi: Otello - Keel Watson (Iago) and Ronald Samm (Othello)Birmingham Opera Company, 2009 On Monday, thanks to BBC iPlayer we were able to catch up on an opera production that I always regretted not seeing, Graham Vick's 2009 production of Verdi's Otello for Birmingham Opera Company with Ronald Samm as Otello (the first time a Black tenor had sung the role in the UK), Keel Watson as Iago and Stephanie Corley as Desdemona, conducted by Stephen Barlow. Set in a huge, bare industrial space Vick's production was deliberately immersive with the locally recruited chorus, team of actors and dancers all mingling with the audience. Inevitably you missed something of the visceral, immersive nature of the production. Watch: Steven McRae and Vasko Vassilev perform Czárdás
Royal Ballet Principal Steven McRae and violinist Vasko Vassilev recently filmed a performance of Czárdás, a tap dance solo originally created by Steven for the inaugaral Ann Maguire Gala in March 2015. The piece features Steven demonstrating his tap skills, drawn on so memorably in the role of the Mad Hatter in Christopher Wheeldon 's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland . This particular performance was filmed on the set of The Royal Opera's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny . 'I grew up in Sydney and I was lucky to have great teachers from day one. They just said "Dance!", whether it was jazz, tap or ballet', Steven said after performing the solo during World Ballet Day earlier this month. 'I think dance education is like your normal education — you do English, Maths, Science — and dance should be the same. I was lucky in that all the […]

International ballet stars to perform at Ann Maguire Gala on 22 March 2015
Emma Maguire in Tryst, The Royal Ballet © ROH/Bill Cooper, 2010 The inaugural Ann Maguire Gala performance hosted by Darcey Bussell and Jonathan Cope will feature an array of stars from the world of ballet in an evening of dance and music in support of the Ann Maguire Arts Education Fund . Emma Maguire says: 'My mother was an inspirational teacher for generations of young people in Leeds. As a family we felt that setting up a charity that continues her dedication to helping young people is what she would have wanted. We are eternally grateful to all the artists that have come together to make the inaugural Ann Maguire Gala possible, an event which not only launches a new charity but will honour our mother.' Featuring divertissements from the classical ballet repertoire including works by Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan , the evening will also include pieces by […]

He has given permission for the recordings to be transferred to CD in order that they can be enjoyed again. Several of the works received their world premiere recordings with this release.
