Today, a piano recital from Samuel Lam. A student of Dr. Soo Young Lee at the Music Institute of Chicago, he presents a recital of Domenico Scarlatti, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Béla Bartók, and Tan Dun before heading to the University of Illinois to major in Statistics. Samuel Lam is 18 years old and just graduated from Libertyville High School. Samuel joined Dr. Soo Young Lee’s studio 4 years ago and has won multiple competitions such as ISMTA, and a scholarship from NSMTA. Recently, Samuel was selected to represent Music Institute of Chicago and participate in a masterclass with Jerome Lowenthal from Juilliard School of Music. In his senior year he won the Libertyville High School concerto competition, playing the third movement of Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto with the school orchestra. He also performed with his high school wind ensemble as a clarinetist during the past four years. Samuel will be attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a Chancellor’s Scholar in the Campus Honors Program in the fall. He will be pursing a career in Mathematics and Statistics but would love to continue playing piano. The post Samuel Lam, 18, piano appeared first on WFMT.
It is time to change the narrative. Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer in the UK, suggested in an itv interview, that artists should retrain. An outcry by artists and media followed. But the question is not if society should support the arts and artists. The question is, argues Bernhard Kerres, do the arts and especially classical music support society. And he answers that with a clear yes. If you are interested in the Be Your Own Manager Webinars on career management and entrepreneurship for classical musicians, you find the details here: www.beyourownmanager.com.
