Ben Johnson (tenor), James Baillieu (piano) (Opus Arte)Tenor Ben Johnson, light-voiced and lyrical, with high notes to make you swoon, and pianist James Baillieu, alert and responsive, are ideal duo partners on this Rosenblatt Recital disc of late Victorian and Edwardian ballads, popular parlour songs at the time of their writing but now mostly forgotten. Sullivan’s mercilessly parodied The Lost Chord – “Seated one day at the organ” – here regains the seriousness of its original intention (Sullivan wrote it at his brother Fred’s deathbed). Composers range from the well known – Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Edward German, Eric Coates – to the less familiar: Liza Lehmann, Amy Woodforde-Finden, Muriel Herbert, Michael Head, Samuel Liddle.
