Grétry and Stephen Oliver both treat, in very different ways, the same episode, that of the minstrel Blondel rescuing his master by singing a familiar song outside Richard's prison. And there is another commonality, both are music theatre works. Oliver's music Blondel (with words by Tim Rice) premiered in London in 1983, whilst Grétry's opéra comique premiered in Paris in 1784.
