Music Institute of Chicago: 12/18: Duke It Out Nutcracker Visits “Indoor Voices"
The Music Institute of Chicago’s “Indoor Voices,” a free series of virtual visits with arts luminaries featuring conversation and occasional performances, returns with a new episode spotlighting the Music Institute’s annual holiday celebration, “Duke It Out Nutcracker,” Friday, December 18 at 7:30 p.m. Music Institute Director of Performance Activities Fiona Queen will talk with John Schmitz, co-founder and artistic producer of Dance Chicago, which has collaborated with the Music Institute on “Duke It Out Nutcracker” since 2009. Music Institute of Chicago: Marcus Roberts Trio March 14, Tribute to Art Blakey March 28 at Nichols Concert Hall
In two performances honoring jazz legends, the Music Institute of Chicago presents the Marcus Roberts Trio, saluting “Piano Giants” March 14, and “100 Years of Art Blakey,” featuring Jazz Messengers alumni, Tammy McCann and more, March 28. Both performances are at 7:30 p.m. at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Ave., Evanston. On March 14, the Marcus Roberts Trio—Roberts on piano, Rodney Jordan on bass, and Jason Marsalis on drums—pay tribute to “Piano Giants” of the 20th century, including Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Thelonious Monk, and Duke Ellington. MUSIC INSTITUTE AND DANCE CHICAGO PRESENT“DUKE IT OUT NUTCRACKER”DECEMBER 7 AT NICHOLS CONCERT HALL Classical music, jazz, and dance combine when the Music Institute of Chicago collaborates with Dance Chicago to present a family concert, “Duke It Out Nutcracker,” Saturday, December 7 at 2 p.m. at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Ave., Evanston. This Nutcracker performance, curated by Dance Chicago, pairs the classical (Tchaikovsky) and jazz (Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn) versions of the holiday favorite, performed by professional brass and woodwind quintets. In tribute to Dance Chicago’s 25th anniversary, the Music Institute is featuring new material this year, including “Chocolate (Spanish Dance).” The performance is a family-friendly 60 minutes.
